19 out of 4000 capacity... this is good news. Nice to see the government planning ahead of the game.

They did hedge their bet by setting up 500 of the 4000 capacity. Hoping won't need the 500 but the virus is not going away anytime soon so we will see a constant need of intensive care beds I'm afraid.

No I don't think so. I don't think the government want us out of lockdown. When they do ease restrictions (for the sake of the economy) they'll still want us socially distancing etc.[/QUOTE]

I'd like to think so, and they'd like us to think so, too, but experience of this government to date would suggest they're probably gagging to end lockdown and get the economy moving again. They only instigated lockdown due to external pressure. It's in their DNA.

If they move too early and people start dying like flies they would be halfway to the guillotine.. I think they are going to play it very very safe.

I think you are wrong. I would imagine you are not a Tory and that comes over very strongly. Prejudice aside, they are, so far, resisting the pressure from the media (not the public as the media want to suggest) and the Labour party. I would, if I were you, question the Labour leadership's demand for a roadmap for exiting lockdown. Pretty unnecessary in my opinion. I think that stance does nothing to help, but increases any perceived pressure on the govt to bring forward plans to ease the restrictions.

One of the primary reasons for lockdown was to manage the flow into the NHS......it will be a heck of a balancing act to gradually release us from lock down without spiking the number of infections again, but if that can be managed then the NHS will continue to cope - as now, pretty much, which is supposed to be the peak - without the Nightingales. Also worth noting though that 'other' hospital admissions are massively down (mixture of people afraid to go to hospital, operations/treatment postponed and lockdown meaning a much, much lower volume of A&E-type admissions) - as lockdown eases those 'normal' admissions will obviously go back up again.

I had a delivery the other evening to Worthing ITU. Not knowing how to get to the ward, I went to A&E for directions, it was deserted, just 2 nurses on reception. The number of injuries and accidental fatalities must be down hugely over the last few weeks.

I read something a few days ago from an orthopedic consultant saying that they'd normally get 40-50 broken bones in A&E over the course of a weekend at his hospital, and last weekend they had just one.

I agree. No chance the government will be 'gagging' to end lockdown whilst numbers could, and would at this stage, skyrocket. They'll certainly be playing it very safe now, I'm sure of it.

On the news yesterday I saw an ICU Consultant in the West Midlands say on any given day he'd have at least one person in for sepsis. He hadn't seen anyone for over a week. Last week I read that a Consultant Cardiologist said suspected heart attack and cardiac arrest admissions are down in his hospital based on numbers this time last year too.

Robert Peston. Idiotic comment about how we are at the peak why not start relaxing things now, is it that the government don't trust the British people.

Hancock just confirmed that although the testing capacity has increased greatly, the number of people coming to be tested is low so the testing numbers still look low. Good news.

:ffsparr:

Especially after the scientists had just said they don’t know yet if we’re at the peak, but their hopes are that we are.

The (few) politicians and journalists now clamouring for a timetable for lifting restrictions, would be the first to blame our strategists if deaths started accelerating away post- lifting of some restrictions.

I heard that too, silly question. This is how the government is now going to be judged. We have gone past making sure we have enough capacity to now needing exact dates and times of when lockdown will be relaxed. Hope the government are sensible here and don't rush things, because all the hard work could be ruined in just a few days, we don't need any more pressure on our NHS.

Not helped by the Labour leader.

But Peston didn’t actually ask that at all ..he asked would the government start to give an idea of how they would start to go about replacing restrictions ..and clarified that people aren’t expecting it now

Hancock did the political job by not answering the question at all which he all so did re isolating people in care homes

He asked something like you said when he was invited to respond. The first time he named all the countries that are now past the peak and starting to ease control, he then went on to ask when we would see that. Why not be patient and stop stoking up a problem that is not there.

But as posted on the other thread, while the majority realise it will not be anytime soon, to start releasing a time table now would be horrendous

Yes I have heard him banging on about a plan. Think most of the general public agree there shouldn't be any plan until new cases are in the double digits and where proper contact tracing can begin.
