I hadn't heard that about Portsmouth - but the local health service here thought that the contact tracking and isolation was rigorous and had gone well.

Contact tracing went really well in that first outbreak in brighton as far as I'm aware it remains the case there have been no deaths in brighton and hove yet but in the last week 2 in eastbourne hospital. It does bring it closer to home

My dad passed away due to COPD 4 years ago. My mum is 85 with chest problems herself. I just feel so helpless because I cant do a thing to help her properly and terrified that i wont get to spend time with her again

that is almost a certainty in my case i'm afraid....couldn't even speak to her yesterday as the hand held phone was under orders to be kept at the desk....some of these measures really do leave me bewildered ....especially when Australia have allowed 5 ocean liners to disembark here over the last 3 days depositing god know how many carriers into the community......Fremantle has just denied docking rights to another and are getting flogged all over the joint......strange times really....!!

Piers Morgan currently being very aggressive with the Health Secretary

Piers Morgan makes 100 terrible points for every 1 good thing he says, I used to think he was a decent bloke but as he’s had more of a ‘platform’ to have his views it’s become clear he’s just an attention seeking moron, the whole ‘spirit penguin’ thing sums him up.

It's when a thumbs up doesn't fit a post. I will call mine when I can and drop food off and stuff but it just feels so weird. And on top of all that starting to homeschool.2 kids to add to the stress

number one will this bug piss off when the weather warms up in europe ...

The weather in southern Spain is already much like a decent summer here so I wouldn't get too excited about that.

As I understand it, one of the main reasons summer tends to knock out seasonal flu is because seasonal flu has an R value of ~1.4 in the winter. I.e. the average person with flu will infect 1.4 other people with the disease.

In the summer when people are outside, having barbecues and sitting in pub gardens, rather than indoors, this value quickly drops below 1 and the flu disappears. All the isolation etc. is trying to get the R value down for coronavirus but from a much higher starting point (I've seen R2 - R6 quoted), because it is much more infectious.

Good luck to your elderly Mum and your wife and daughter. It is indeed exceptionally worrying times for all of us but especially vulnerable people and health professionals. No expert but regarding your questions:

number one will this bug piss off when the weather warms up in europe

It seems to spreading in the middle east so I am not so sure about this.

nno 2 is it actually any worse than the normal flu season

It most certainly is!

no3 what are the authorities actually up to..??

Simply trying to stop healthcare systems falling apart and causing even more people to die.

really dont know what the problem is with some in the media. they'd rather attack and act as some sort of political opposition, instead of having open discussion to be informative. saw this with the PM updates, some asking minute details or epic rambling questions more like editorial points.

Dropped my wife off at school, worried. However that is nothing compared to all those who have to work in the NHS. Hope i'm not lecturing, but as everyone else has said just be sensible and stay in. If you need some fresh air go in the back garden. If you really need a walk stay local and avoid people.
Dropped my misses off to the hospital this morn (work). Her nan (only relative left) was rushed into hospital in bracknell last night with what looks like serious bowl cancer, doesn't look good. However my misses cant take paid leave for grandparents and her colleague is currently off with the virus!

Can I just ask all those above, can’t be bothered to learn how to multi quote, what the **** does it matter what time the latest figures are released?

These are people’s lives, people who will be leaving behind devastated loved ones!

If it bothers you all so much, I will be sure to pm you all, before 9am, if my wife becomes another statistic for you to puzzle over!

I think the vasts majority on here are well aware that these are people and not just statistics but you need the stats to track the spread and take appropriate measures.

I'm guessing your wife is either in a vulnerable group or may have the virus. If that's the case then I hope it all works out well for you both but maybe it might help if you stay of this thread for a little while, the very reason Bozza put up the sub forum.

My wife works in the intensive care with **** all PPE and we learn today Mr Hancock said the government had bought a million more facemasks, had shipped 2.6 million masks over a 24-hour period, and had stocks of equipment it was trying to get to the "right people". Why wasn't this done two weeks ago?

Shouldnt that mean that if you are infected, the next guy getting tested could get it through the suit?
I have no idea, just saying this is what happened. There were at least 10 people with me that were tested and there was no suit change. This was also around midday so he must have tested many more when they turned up for work and for trials.

look...it was a straight up question, not after a row..................is this how a mutating flu bug attacks an ageing population , weird that it's got a grip in northern italy but the epicentre is now , apparently , free of new cases.
Italy has taken unprecedented measures in order to try to stop this thing spreading. We don't do that for a normal flu do we?

Yes my wife has Lymphoma, (a blood cancer), so is VERY vulnerable.

My staying off the threads would make no difference, the comments are still there, people, real human beings, whose death is just being talked about as another dot on a graph, by people who have nothing better to do - we’re not the decision makers!

Why wasn't this done a month ago when we could see the numbers increasing across Europe. All I can do now is say thank you very much to your wife and all the other NHS professionals, do our bit, stay in and not make their jobs harder than they currently are.

Nothing better to do seems harsh. As I stated I'm interested in the figures. I'm worried as stated about my elderly mother with breathing issues and my partner and daughter who are both considered very high risk. Once again I apologise for being interested and worried but I'm certainly not doing it cos I'm sat around with nothing better to do and resent that suggestion. Like yourself I'm terrified right now and more so once lockdown inevitably comes as I will have people in 2 separate locations I need to support

not everyone is the same. I also have people who are very at risk but the stats also interest me immensely.

I don't think this is an arguement worth making.

Plenty bigger things to worry about

Let people do what they got to

good luck

I'm exactly where you are. I dont see the issue in being interested in what's going on out there
