Unprecedented economic intervention:

Govt will step in and help to pay peoples wages.

Any employers, small or large will be eligible... for a GRANT to cover the wages of people who are not able to work. 80% of their salary, up to £2500 a month.

No limit to the size of the scheme, back-dated to 1st March.

Extraordinary.

Socialism at work. Funny old world, eh ?

I assume those who don't like such an ideology will refuse help....

I’d obviously seen the reports of shortages at supermarkets but nothing prepared me for my first visit to Gatwick Tesco’s today. It has been two weeks since the wife and I had been shopping, as in so called ‘high risk’ groups, we’ve both been following advice to minimise contact with others as much as possible.

We went in the hour that Tesco’s have advertised as specially for essential workers and the elderly. It was absolutely packed but most of the shelves were empty. Fortunately we managed to get some milk, veg and some salad. No tins of anything, no bread, no flour, rice or any other dried goods. We gave in and came home. I’m just hoping that as people find their store cupboards full or run out of money the shelves will start to fill again.

Where are people storing all the bread, milk and other stuff - I spoke to a friend who works at Tesco’s and they said they are still getting just as many deliveries in as normal, in some categories more than normal. I don’t understand it - surely freezer space is limited as are cupboards!

We are going through our freezer, we have stuff that we purchased months ago. We will go through this because this whole shopping thing is getting real stressful at the moment. As long as we can get some milk, bread and a bit of fruit we are OK. If necessary we will eat less.

I don't know what where the hell people are putting it either, but looking on pictures taken from Facebook some greedy ******** have stockpiled so much they will never ever go through it.

Think about the people on the front line of all this NHS, Teachers, and yes supermarket workers who are probably have to deal with a ton of crap from customers getting in their faces.

Rishi just said they are closing shops too! WTF!

If he did he meant pubs, bars, clubs, restaurants and gyms.

However many shops do now appear to be closing, charity shops round are way are as have some chains, think River Island has shut.

So those who haven't been panic buying are the problem.

Well I guess I need to apologise.

 Panic buying in large volumes is different from buying a little extra each time you go. Maybe you don't think it is but I beg to differ. And to be quite frank, if you haven't started getting prepared for this then more fool you.

I'm afraid I don't share your confidence .... can't see them being able to get anything on shelves before it instantly disappears.

I don't have any answers beyond some sort of full on rationing, at least until the public have figured out that normal supplies can be maintained

Rationing may well now be the answer, at least it would ensure vulnerable groups/key workers get their fair share.

to put the responsibility onto supermarkets primarily is a hiding to nothing.

In Florida during a hurricane threat there is usually a visible but relatively low profile police presence outside most supermakets (people tend to behave decently as this is a regular occurence and they tend to know the score anyway) but it does calm things down a bit.

I think you hit the nail on the head, the frequency of the events in Florida and the history means people know what to expect. Hopefully, this sort of pandemic doesn't become an annual event!!

If he did he

He did. I wouldn’t have posted it if he hadn’t said it.

A Times journalist picked him up on it. His answer was confusing at best as he chose not to admit he’d made a mistake. Luckily, there was a Woman on hand to clarify that they are not asking shops to close.

I take your point that many are though as the high street has effectively been killed off by the virus.

Here, bars & restaurants have been closed for 8 days, malls and shops (pretty much everything, apart from food shops), for 5 days, combined police & army patrols enforcing it, face masks in shops for 5 days, internal travel, unless for work or necessary food banned for 4 days, and since yesterday face masks even on the street obligatory under penalty of a 20k kc fine. Borders closed in/out for over a week. Food shops seem to have plenty of food (and loo rolls). Surprised its taken so long in the UK tbh

Edit: Given myself a lecture over making political points. Apologies.

Got to say that the Tesco Express that I use in Birmingham city centre has been pretty much fully stocked throughout, with the exception of toilet rolls and soaps. I realise this is no consolation to many of you, but I find it interesting how situations differ.

It's the big stores the plonkers are turning up to in their cars and doing a supermarket sweep style shop. Smaller stores more likely frequented by basket shoppers who may still be just buying what they actually want rather than 400 tins of soup.
