You’re citing articles about “people catching it twice” and declaring it really, really worrying without fact checking any of it.

It's being reported by NHK, Japan's national broadcasting organization. That's my source.

Users on here are free to interpret and discuss such stories as they see fit.

I would suggest stories from local sources such as NHK are more reliable than you. "It's just flu".

Coronavirus / Covid-19

Writing a blank cheque for the NHS right now and repurposing production lines should be supported regardless of political allegiance. The rest needs addressing the other side of this.

Of course I support those actions but they seem like weak propaganda to me. Hancock has put a lot of Political spin into his statement. The decision to actively use war analogy style language is Orwellian and disturbing (although completely expected from this mob.)

To stand back and say that you shouldn’t criticise the government in times of crisis does not wash with me. I’m with the 200+ scientists who have actively got together and called the government out on the mistakes they are making. Once academics get back to their institutions on Monday, the criticism from the scientific community is going to go off the scale. I suspect the government will have some sort of ‘criticism suppression’ measures in the bill they need to pass; Corbyn is a bigger mug than I thought if he expects to receive a draft to scrutinise prior to it sailing straight through Parliament.

Ok, reasonable. But it calls into question the recovery/isolation time.

It does, and highlights how short a period we’ve had to study the virus, but actually it’s unprecedented how much we’ve already found out in this short span of time. Given health professionals are under great stress, and testing is new etc. there is of course a real possibility it is mistaken testing.

GingerBeerMan: "So why are multiple governments plus the WHO saying we need to be prepared and why are millions of people in lockdown across the world? We didn't see this with bird flu. So I'll ask my question again, why is this virus so different?"

The Clamp: "It’s not. Get a grip."

It’s not any different to flu in the sense that all procedures by individuals prevent catching it and spreading it are the same. Believe me, I’m knee deep in it at work.
My suggestion would be to follow sensible procedures, as one would to prevent other viruses and flus and stop scaring yourself with horror stories from the Internet.

I’m off to bed after a long night shift.
Goodnight. And good luck.

Do the government seriously think over 70s will self isolate and sit at home for 4 months ? Ridiculous, no one of free will would do that especially if not ill. I am sure most would prefer to get out and take their chances

Mrs T got a text from the daughter of my old mate, Bob the (former) social worker, with whom I watch telly football 6 nights a week. He's 77, and of rude health, but the daughter is worried. So we are setting up a shopping network for the olds on our street.

That said, you are right. Unless a vaccine is invented everyone is always at risk. The virus will find a host, and it spreads damned quickly and easily. Staying in doors for 4 months isn't a solution.

My feeling is the governments worldwide are advocating drastic measures now (worse to come for us next week) just to see what happens, on the 'it can't make it any worse' principle. Not sure if our government is clueless or is simply in thrall to the charming but useless Patrick Vallance.

Incidentally, what happened to my 'have you got corona virus yet?' thread? Binned for bad taste? I was genuinely interested. I still don't know a single person who has it.

Seems to have just disappeared in China after a few (3 or 4) months..... ?

I think it's a reasonable plan from the government ... Quarantine the old and sick.

Regards the critisism of the scientific community, to give fair balance, there are many from that community who say the current course taken purely on the advice of Vallance and Whittey is the correct one.

Fwiw my gut agrees with you and the 225 odd that wrote the open letter, I am fully ready to be restricted versus allowing everyone to get infected and many more die, in the hope that something like Remdesivir or a vaccine can win the race. But it's not correct to say this is clear cut. It's a version of leave Vs remain, labour Vs Tory.......an equivalent and opposite argument in the scientific community where 2 sides absolutely believe they're right and the other is wrong.

We keep going over this one: because China have locked up many tens of millions of people, where "locked up" literally means that.

If people aren't mixing the virus can't spread. It's really that simple, and short-term it's clearly a tactic that will work - you don't need fancy science modelling for that one.

The big question China has is how they progress from here. Is it really practical to take the lid off things, let life return to normal, force quarantine any international arrivals and not have the virus bubble up again?

I suspect it was merged into this one - bloody Nazi mods :annoyed:

Good point though. Does anyone on NSC have it/know of someone close to them who has it ? (None of that 6 degrees of separation malarkey). And has Bozza set up a self isolation area on NSC for when someone does ?
