A very interesting read. I'm glad I'm not south of the border, a bit close for comfort though.

This sentence really sums it up for me:
"This country is structurally incapable and fundamentally unwilling to put people over money, and all people over just some."

A look at border restrictions in Europe

Various European countries have closed their borders or announced new restrictions in the past day or two. Here's a summary of some of the measures introduced:

Denmark: Bans all foreigners from entering without a valid purpose (such as residency or emergency family visit)
Poland: Foreigners banned from entering from Sunday
Czech Republic: Bans all foreigners from entering the country, except those with residence permits. Bans its own nationals from leaving
Slovakia: Closes borders to all foreigners except Poles and those with a residence permit
Austria: Closes three land border crossings with Italy to all foreigners, except those with a medical certificate issued within four days. No restriction on Austrian nationals
Ukraine: Closes border crossings to foreigners (except diplomats) for two weeks
Hungary: Closes land borders with Austria and Slovenia
Slovenia: Closes six border crossings with Italy. Bus and train travel suspended. Foreigners may only enter with a medical certificate issued within three days
Serbia: Closes border crossings with Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Croatia
Romania: Closes borders with Hungary, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Moldova
Albania: Closes borders with Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia

Bang goes the EU's open border policy for member states. I'm pretty sure the suits in Brussels will be pretty pissed.

I’m lost. I thought we were letting the virus spread unchecked so that we develop a herd immunity
Herd immunity is generally created by the use of vaccinations, although those who have become immune to a virus (due to having had it) will effectively count too. If we were to let the virus spread unchecked, people will be dropping like flies.

There's plenty of wiggle room between China's complete shut-down, and allowing it to spread unchecked. We won't be at either extreme for the time being. Getting people to self-isolate when they have a cough or temperature, and encouraging people to wash their hands more etc is not letting it spread unchecked.

In a year or so we'll have a better idea of what strategies have been the most successful, but even then we might not know for sure, due to other variables in each country (like the weather, population density, health system etc).

The USA is in reality a very backward nation

Oh massively. They absolutely hate change too. Just look at how they still insist on using imperial measurements for everything, still use those manky green dollar bills, drive trucks which look like they were built in the 1960s. With the exception of technology development in Silicon Valley, the US hasn't really changed at all in the last 100 years.

It's sad really. I've met so many nice Americans over the years. I just wish the society matched the individuals.

I wonder what would have happened if all the countries had done this when this thread was started.

Probably just a blip, but only 1 UK death today. Other European countries are suffering a lot worse despite more restrictions.

they would be a couple of weeks behind on infections, once they opened their borders they'd start again.

I couldn't be less of a fan of the moron but both he and the Health Officers have explained clearly and scientifically their rationale. All seems to make sense (but what do most of us know) but the hysterical shouting of a small number on here clearly know better.

To be fair that’s the same case when talking about tactics, managers or Brexit - some clearly know more than the experts!

As a Brit that moved here a few years ago and has regularly traveled through 49 of the states for work (Maine is too far even for me), I've said for years it really is a third world country outside the major cities. We're in for a very rough time I think...

I was ambivalent about this treating it in my usual glib manner.

But it would seem I need to reevaluate:-
