I'm just not buying it. I know you're concerned about it, but I really can't find it in me to think it's anything more than a flavour of the month story which will inevitably be out of the news as soon as something else happens. Obviously the numbers are terrible in Italy, and they've got some serious questions to answer about how they've struggled so badly to contain the spread.

It seems to me that the biggest threat to the UK is people coming home infected, which is definitely something to worry about - but so long as people coming back from Italy, etc, keep themselves to themselves for two weeks then the danger has passed, right? I just think that the coverage of the story should be to wash your hands, if you're feeling ill get tested but also bear in mind that if you're otherwise healthy and not over 60, you're going to be absolutely fine. Stay away from elderly relatives and anyone with a compromised immune system, but you're hardly a threat to yourself or anyone else.

Sadly for me, my Nan passed away in October. If she were still with us, I'm sure I and my family generally would be more worried because you never want a loved one to die of anything, let alone something they could be protected from. But the odds are in your favour in terms of being able to avoid it.

Jeez - amazing stuff. Another I’m alright Jack.

Actually the odds are in my favour too, but probably my odds are not as high as your odds.

West, West, West Sussex.
Well, they’re either worried enough to self isolate or they’re not. No good whingeing about nobody doing anything and then..... not doing anything.

If they think Johnson and the CMO are telling lies, go against their advice and lock yourself down.

Absolutely nothing stopping anyone getting the family in one house, taking the kids out of school, stocking up, calling in sick and going to ground.

Is there?

Nothing. Apart from money and their livelihood.

Just like this one boasting about it on Twitter. Check out his floor.

Bloke and his wife in Sainsbury’s car park last week (wearing gloves), filming each other with around 5x9 packs of loo roll.

Huge regret that I didn’t confront them, film them and get it on social media.

Scum

Unless someone has invented time travel it is physically impossible to vaccinate against a flu strain that hasn’t occurred yet. To male the vaccine you need to have access to the strain you are immunising against. The race is now on to have a vaccine ready for next winter as this strain will still be around for the foreseeable future. As a nation we do not have the ability to generate our own vaccine so don’t hold your breath.

In years where the flu has been more of an issue is normally down to the strain not being covered by the vaccine that was given. Some years they include more than one vaccine, also the vaccine action last for ten years.

The above is from a conversation with a gp friend. I may have misunderstood, it is not FACT.

Actually, think you will find you are right. Think it is to do with which strain is prevalent in the southern hemisphere during their winter!

Confront them?

You'd have been better served laughing at them, and telling them to stop and evaluate their existence.

"Look at us. Look at us. We've bought 45 toilet rolls"

Sad, sad ****ing gimps.

54 new cases today. Not "exponential". Still fewer than 400 country wide. Of course this is a) one day and b) 54 more people who can pass it on to someone else.

Which of course is far more important than their health!!

Which can, in extreme cases, be the same thing. How many people have been tipped over the edge to suicide after financial problems? How many end up on the streets after financial problems and end up alcoholic / drug addicted?

Ryanair and BA cancelled all flights to Italy, but we still dither and don't force any self quarantine or even shut the border from known hotspots like Italy/Iran..

This from the guardian: and when I read it Vs what others are doing, some with less worse than us, it makes us look a joke imho.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/10/pressure-builds-on-uk-to-step-up-coronavirus-measures

In it is this: "Among those calling for a change of tactics soon was Dr Peter Drobac, an expert in infectious diseases at Oxford University, who told the BBC he believed it was time to seriously consider some of the social distancing adopted by other countries, including closing schools.

“The evidence we have suggests that social distancing works best before the surge in cases rather than after,” said Drobac, adding that with hindsight it appeared Italy had waited too long before implementing such measures".

Update: 168 deaths in Italy in the last 24 hours

Yet some people seem to still think that it's media hype.
That's the equivalent of a plane falling out of the sky everyday (and that's just Italy at the moment).

Confront them? I wouldn't bother... just ask them to make sure they are stockpiling condoms as well

Roughly the same number of new cases for the past three or four days. Either the country is doing something right in terms of containment or it's just a positive looking blip in the data. Shouldn't we expect a faster increase in the number of new infections assuming each new case has passed it on to at least a couple of others?

Are you able to break that down though, genuinely? I am curious about the profile, I've not been able to find it anywhere. The numbers are well reported, but the demographics don't appear to be unless I'm looking in the wrong places. To be clear, I'm not being sarcastic - I am genuinely interested.

If they're all already unwell people in their 70s/80s then that should be made much clearer to quieten down people like me who think that the media are enjoying this far too much and reporting on it far too keenly. If the demographics of the folks sadly dying is anything else, then that's a story which warrants more serious attention and coverage.

This is such a sad situation for Italy now.
