Just 2 one downstairs one upstairs.
Unless YouTube/Google/ manufacturers website or helpdesk says otherwise, I'd say change both batteries for new Duracells, hoover out, ensure paper gasket is in correctly, replace and test. If beep doesn't stop I'd guess these babies are done and you need a couple of new alarms fitted. They seem to be a bit niche, so maybe get an alarm company to do it rather than have a go yourself or use a standard electrician because if it goes wrong, that bleep is a prelude to madness!

Alarm companies generally don’t have anything to do with mains wired smoke alarms as they aren’t qualified to do so.
Fire alarm companies often sub out the electrical connection to a fire panel to an electrician because again they aren’t qualified to sign off on the new circuit.
Luckily I do both if you have 8 or more detectors I would recommend a fire panel every time. The detectors themselves are smaller and more discreet, one battery in the panel and a way more efficient system over all.

At the end of my tether
I had that problem once with wired in smoke alarm . I took it out , disconnected, but its residual battery kept beeping . I took it in the car still beeping and chuckled in in a nearby river. I could hear a forlorn beeep glug sound as it went down.

Legally everyone and everything needs fire alarms here... but the first thing I do when I move somewhere is to pull them down. They make a lot of noise in case of smoke or fire... very annoying. Get rid.

Suggest you do the same. Batteries are possibly expensive these days.

Invalidating the owners insurance, that’s not a nice thing to do.

The mains powered Carbon Monoxide / Smoke Alarm in our kitchen started beeping, it was to indicate the whole unit needed replacing. They have a life of around 7 years, and it was pretty much exactly 7 years to the day from when the house was completed.

Try to find the same model online and then it is just a simple swap to unplug the old one and plug in the new one.

Tip: Remember to flick the switch on the back/remove the plastic tab on the new one before fitting, otherwise it will keep beeping at you because it isn't charging/has low battery.

I've recently taken a Hammer to mine. Surprisingly, that didn't make it work albeit it made me feel better (Same issue as OP, new battery but wouldn't STFU). That's the second time I've done that recently so am now down to 1 working in the house which I need to fix in the near future.

Can anyone recommend a brand? Given they are 20 years old ish, I guess they've run their race.

I'm in the situ too, I have one mains that hasn't given me the dreaded beep on one level and another on another level that has (hence this thread I continue to be grateful for all replies thanks). I have decided I have no choice but to get them both replaced. I have a battery only smoke alarm as a back up until then. Whether they need replacing now or will last another 6 months or year or two I need peace of mind and no headaches from the beeping!

I cannot tell you how long it took me to realise (once the back compartment was taken off to insert battery*) the red flipper is all I can call it that popped up near where the battery resides, in the battery smoke alarm I got. is basically designed to do just that make it near impossible to close the lid WITHOUT a battery installed. Obviously that's the whole idea you cant create a false impression you have a smoke alarm operationing with no battery power working it.
* came with a battery (would need to else the back compartment that fits to the ceiling cant shut) but battery is in a plastic cover that needs removing.
