I don't even understand what those results are meant to mean..

2 sniffer dogs were used , one trained to sniff out the scent of human blood and another to sniff out the scent of a dead body. The dogs have no reason to ignore any evidence or provide an incorrect result.

Except for the fact that they are not crime computers, they are bloody dogs!

One dog found blood behind the sofa in the apartment they stayed in (later confirmed by forensics). Another dog indicated that a dead body had lain behind the sofa and in a wardrobe. The same cadaver dog indicated a body in had been in their hire car and been in contact with items of their clothing.

None of this is enough to accuse or convict anybody but why try and discredit the dogs? The dogs were probably the only ones involved in the investigation who were completely objective.

Wasn't it one of her toys in the boot which they said transferred DNA to that area ?

A dog wouldn't try to ignore or cover up something though , they were just doing a task they were trained for.

Report:

August 2nd 2007 -6.14pm - 27 Rue das Floras- Praia Da Luz - Lagos

Participants:

PJ: Ricardo P & J. Carlos P., inspectors.
UK: Mark Harrison, Martin Grime & Eddie.

On that date, within the context of a residential search, carried out at the McCann couple's current residence, an inspection by a dog handling team was made. Thus, at the time indicated at the beginning of the report, all areas of the property were inspected and the following results obtained:

6.36pm - The dog Eddie, who detects cadaver odours, "marked" the area of a cupboard in the living room. On checking, the dog was indicating a pink soft toy belonging to Madeleine McCann.

But if a dog's testimony was substantial enough evidence why have they not been arrested and charged (the McCann's/Not the dogs)?

As much as that joke is obviously very witty and hilarious - wouldn't she have another 6 years to go to catch up with him?

Taken from Martin Grime's statement in official police files:

Vol IX p. 2481

FALSE ALERTS

'False' positives are always a possibility; to date Eddie has not so indicated
operationally or in training. In six years of operational deployment in over 200
criminal case searches the dog has never alerted to meat based and
specifically pork foodstuffs designed for human consumption. Similarly the
dog has never alerted to 'road kill', that is any other dead animal.
My experience as a trainer is that false alerts are normally caused by handler
cueing. All indications by the dog are preceded by a change in bahaviour.
This increased handler confidence in the response. This procedure also stops
handlers 'cueing' and indication. The dogs are allowed to 'free search' and
investigate areas of interest. The handler does not influence their behaviour

Because:
There is no body.
No way to show whose body was there.
No way to show how the person died.
No way to show who may have killed the person that lay there.

If the McCanns DID do it, or were involved in any way, surely they'd be happy to see the matter drop? Or are they so clever that not only did they successfully get rid of their daughter and build up a lucrative industry out of her disappearance, but they get a weird kick out of playing a dangerous game of double-bluff with the Authorities?

But what you are suggesting is that it has been proven beyond reasonable doubt that a body was in their apartment. Surely that would have diverted any investigation quite seriously...

It did divert the investigation - but with a lack of any other hard evidence - and with no-one confessing - I am not sure what else could have been done.

Ever tried hiding a dead body?

I have to say I haven't but I was under the impression that it isn't that easy - that the police tend to find it eventually. Not least when it is the highest profile crime case in the world. Do you really believe a couple of tourists in a foreign country would be able to dispose of the body in a way that has eluded everyone?
This is the only reason I can't accept that the McCann's did it. They might have paid someone else to do it but I can't see it somehow.
The girl was nicked.
