Madeleine McCann...

I wonder how many blaming the parents and accusing them of killing maddie would also have thought that a parent or the parents of Jessica Chapman & Holly Wells were responsible for their disappearance until Ian Huntley was caught?

I wonder how many thought that the parents of the missing Ohio girls (Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight) were responsible for their disappearance before they were eventually found and it turned out to have been Ariel Castro who did it?

And so on....... It amazes me how quick some are to blame the parent(s) and usually based on a hunch rather than any proof.

The comment that the McCanns are always in the media and doing it just to top up funds for their appeals is one i find quite disgusting, if a child was missing and the parents didn't continue to try to campaign of their return or highlight their plight, then the case would simply be forgotten about and the search would stop and Maddie it would be even less likely that she would ever be found.

The parents of the missing girls in Ohio and their community held regular vigils, etc.. this too would have been covered by the press and publicised the case. Because the McCanns are doing something similar in their case does it make them guilty?

There have been a number of reports that the twins were found to be sedated and remained so during the police search. Hence question 20:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/madeleinemccann/2500864/Madeleine-McCann-Kate-McCann-refused-to-answer-48-questions-from-Portuguese-police.html

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13386785

Look at this timeline. The suspicion that Madeleine's blood was found in the flat and the hire car has been ruled out. Portuguese media claimed definitive proof that it was her blood...in fact it was inconclusive whose blood it was. Shortly thereafter the Police issued a statement of clarification that, in fact, there was " no new evidence" and the McCanns were cleared of suspicion.

Having small children of my own I don't find it shocking that they were sleeping through this whole episode. Mine sleep through all knds of racket and being carried around.

Maddie, if you're reading please come back. This thread has gone on way too long.

Not entirely true. There was access to their apartments that lay outside the gated perimeter, facing directly onto a carpark with full public acess and a side gate that was easily accessable by the public.

I stand corrected, maybe though they still thought it was a safer area than it really was.

To me, if the appartment was outside the gated perimeter, I would probably question why it was needed and think the apparent may not be that safe a place to leave their kids alone but they could be relaxed whilst on holiday, let their guard down and just didn't really think through the dangers properly.

Is the more likely scenario. This was day 5 of the Holiday, they were relaxed and probably not thinking about child kidnappers roaming the streets.

All of their friends that night were popping back and checking on the kids so they were all in the same mindset. I think it's probably fair to say that SINCE Madeleine people have changed their behaviour. That's probably no bad thing.

Yep, these parents were popping back to make sure their kids were comfortable and asleep, not to see if they were still there.

Ok, what point were you making then?

The way I read it is that different parents have different ideas of what is acceptable and what isn't, something you notice when you're a parent because you judge other parents for how they raise their kids or feel judged by other parents for how you raise your kids. Though I think that's something even non-parents can see.

Given all the threads about speed limits, drink driving limits, parking enforcement, etc. the drink driving analogy also works. There seem to be people in those discussions that don't have a problem with driving after a drink or two, arguing drink affects people differently, so one limit for everyone doesn't take that into account. People who continue to drink and drive and not have a problem with it because they believe the risk is acceptable dependable on how much they drink, how far they have to drive. Some parents think it's acceptable to socialise a distance from their sleeping children based on how far away they are, i.e. some might be ok with sitting in their neighbours back garden and drinking while their kids sleep in their own bed.

It's about different people having different ideas of where the risk threshold lay.

let their guard down and just didn't really think through the dangers properly.

As professional people and supposedly responsible I would say they neglected here to the point they should have be prosecuted.
They turned downed the offer of a baby sitter and left a pair of 18 month old babies along with 3 year old maddie alone unsupervised in a foreign country whilst they went off out for the night.

That is neglect, I don't think they had anything to do with her disappearance but they put her in that vulnerable position for which they should answer to.

Can anyone on here honestly say they would leave 3 children under 4 alone unsupervised whilst going out for the night?
Never mind in the supposedly safety of your own home but this was in a foreign country where gated communities are needed for security.

THEY WERE ALL UNDER FOUR YEARS OLD FFS
Defend the parents all you like. I consider them negligent at the very least.

I'd agree with all of that.

Surely the person who took her is to blame? Not the parents.

What actual evidence is there that she has been abducted? Besides the parents' assertion and her absence?

One reported sighting by eight people of a man carrying a blonde child some distance away at around 10pm. Which was identified with a high level of probability as being Gerry McCann.

Anything else?

My pleasure Bevendean....If you want to defend them, and you consider their actions as normal...its your perogative...i dont consider it normal.
With children that age, i would want them in at LEAST earshot, and would still feel uncomfortable with that.
To leave children of that age unattended is for me, unacceptable. Sorry if that offends.

Ive got Kids that age...Its probably not something that I would do, but that might be because the littleuns are all born POST Maddie.

Not sure I would have considered it as a likely threat before then. Still, the retroscope is a marvellous instument.

"Although Mr Smith admitted he was not wearing his glasses at the time he later said he thought the man could have been Gerry McCann.

Key witness: Irishman Martin Smith, pictured, was in the resort with his family when Maddie disappeared
This is an impossibility as dozens of witnesses confirmed he was at the holiday complex at

10pm. British police have also said they are certain that Mr McCann has nothing to do with his daughter’s (dis)appearance. sic"

No-one can have seen him carrying her because there are MANY witnesses to him being in the complex at the time of the sightings.

As a parent mate...I think you would....maddie is not the reason I would check on my kid...my kid was the reason, i checked up on my kid...constantly.

...and decided to completely ignore the concerns of two of their three children who awoke, crying, the previous evening and discovered their parents were not in the apartment.
This fills me with horror that very young children admit to their parents that they were frightened when they realised they were alone and yet the parents do exactly the same thing the following evening.
Anyone ' canvassing ' the complex for vulnerability could have heard the unchecked crying the previous evening, noted the apartment number and then carried out further surveillance.
The McCanns, through their behaviour, gave a potential abductor every opportunity.

Maybe you're right. Its just that what happened to her has changed everyones worldview.

I also have a grown up son, he was never out of our sight for long that I can remember but times were more relaxed then. I remember many holidays in Portugal with him and my sisters kids, we had a villa we rented every year and we were often out by the pool having barbeques etc. while the kids were asleep. I just cant remember whether the women in the group took it in turns to stay indoors when the blokes were outside caning the cinzano.
