Mackail-Smith to Leeds rumour picking up...

Silly old bat
The main reason we didn't create lots of chances for CMS last year was because 95% of the time the ball was played into his feet, it would ping off for a throw-in or to an opposing player. The replacement doesn't need to be a target man, as long as he can involve himself in passing football - CMS has been unable to do so. So to answer your question, having a forward who can be successfully involved in passing movements will mean our moves won't break down and we'll create more chances.

I agree with that and also remember that CMS didn't score many goals for Posh when they were in the Championship despite playing with the same service from Peteborough players. Championship defenders are quicker, and read the game better.

CMS will be staying and will be a complete success this season imho !!!

Would help if the club put these rumours to bed.

Well why not adapt our game to suit him?

Do you really see Gus changing his entire lifetime's football philosophy - patient, intelligent passing football - to suit one middling Championship player?

I don't see us becoming Kick'n'Rush anytime soon.

Never change an approach that is being implemented through every level of the club from the kids through to the development squad to the first team for a single player. No player is bigger than the club, and the club is embarking on long term vision for playing football in a particular way which I might add is attracting some top top players. If CMS can't adapt his game to our way of playing, then we need a new striker, not the other way round.

We don't need to 'adapt' our game, we actually just need to get better at playing it. It was by no means perfect last season, but that doesn't mean you need to change, you just need to improve.

A million times this.

We will continue playing the same way, and we will continue to improve at it. Been the same since day ONE with Gus here.

Many strikers, but not ALL strikers. We need to find a striker that won't struggle. Personally I felt the Chelsea game showed what we could do when the front man had a decent touch. Vicente, Barnes and Buckley seemed to rotate in that role and they linked up so well. CMS hasn't been able to link up well with anyone since he arrived, apart from a couple of early games (e.g. Leeds) with Barnes.

Exactly my point, 'many strikers', but not all. If we bring in a new striker he should be significantly better than CMS - but I suspect we would be taking a similar punt with Rhodes or McCormack and no guarantee that more goals would result. I would prefer to see someone with a Prem pedigree who will make the difference at this level. I guess we would have to pay big bucks so could see CMS being part of a deal. The irony is that I suspect CMS will do better this season with our more dynamic midfield to give him closer support. Ideally we should be building a stronger squad towards the Prem and would like to see CMS part of that.

IN THE LEED ... United are chasing Maynard
Nicky is Leeds’ Mayn target
By MICHAEL MORGAN Published: Today at 00:27

WEST HAM ace Nicky Maynard has leapfrogged Craig Mackail-Smith on Leeds’ wish-list.
Boss Neil Warnock is in the market for a new striker, despite Ross McCormack saying he is ready to pledge his future to the Elland Road outfit by signing a three-year deal.

Now Hammers hit-man Maynard has emerged as Warnock’s No1 target.

Maynard, 25, has endured a frustrating time at Upton Park since arriving in a £2million switch from Bristol City last January.

He failed to nail down a regular place in boss Sam Allardyce’s starting line-up as the East Enders clinched instant promotion back to the Premier League with a Wembley play-off final win over Blackpool.

Maynard, who had landed a two-and-a-half year deal, made just 16 appearances and scored only three goals as Big Sam shuffled his strike force.

Now the Hammers are ready to let Maynard move on, so long as they can do a deal which will see them get their money back on the marksman.

Leeds are prepared to meet the asking price, although Maynard’s wages could be a problem as he is believed to be on £25,000-a-week at Upton Park.

But Warnock is hoping the Yorkshire club will push out the boat after he decided that he would rather have Maynard than Brighton’s Mackail-Smith.

The Scotland hit-man, 27, is on offer after a tough first campaign at the Amex Stadium following his £2.5million move from Peterborough last summer.

Seagulls chief Gus Poyet was hoping to complete a swap deal which would see McCormack, 25, trade places with Mackail-Smith.

But Scottish international McCormack, who top scored with 19 goals for Leeds last term, has re-opened contract talks with Leeds.

I totally agree. In my opinion, that is why CMS is not suited to Championship football. His game and technical ability in ineffective against quality defenders. First touch is so important in creating the space, and his is that of a rapist.
