Joel Lynch wants to leave Albion but his demand has been rejected by the Seagulls.
They have turned down a written transfer request from the 20-year-old centre half.
Youth team product Lynch, an injury doubt before the first game of the season, has lost out so far at the heart of the defence to summer signing Colin Hawkins and at left-back to Matt Richards, who has returned on loan from Ipswich.
His demand comes with Albion flying high near the top of the League One table after an unbeaten start in which they have conceded only two goals in four games, one of them a penalty.
Manager Micky Adams said: “I can confirm that Joel has submitted a written transfer request but, as far as the club is concerned, I have recommended to the Board and the Board have agreed with me that we turn it down.”
Lynch has scored two goals in 93 appearances for Albion, the latest as a second-half substitute against Bristol Rovers at Withdean 11 days ago, since breaking into the first team in January 2006.
He was on target with Jake Robinson and Jonny Dixon yesterday in a 3-0 friendly victory for the reserves at Wycombe Wanderers.
Adams, hoping to add creativity to his squad before the transfer window closes on Monday, is coy about the prospect of a move for Crystal Palace’s Brighton-born winger Paul Ifill.
He said: “Paul’s been placed on the transfer list by Neil Warnock and if he was available he is a player that we may be interested in but we are interested in a lot of players at the moment so I would have to scotch that rumour.”
