I'm going to be in Luxembourg (both the city and the rest of the country) for a month from the end of next week. On the off-chance that anyone here has been and has any recommendations for great places to eat/sleep/drink/visit, please post them here and I will attempt to try them all out.

Yep. It's a great place to sleep.

Even sleepier is the Belgian province of Luxembourg, just over the border.

As far as the city goes, this is what I can remember about it. The fortifications and the tunnels underneath them are worth a look. I can't vouch for the tunnels myself as they were shut when I was there. The fortifications are one of those world heritage thingys.

There are some fairly spectacular views to be had across the gorge and the old town was a reasonably pleasant wander. There are quite a few cafes and bars in the square where the bandstand is. I sampled the wares of most of them but unfortunately I can't remember the names of the decent ones. I don't recall any of them being staggeringly awful, however.

The hideous building in Kirchberg that looks like it's about to fall off the cliff used to be the European Parliament building. I'm not sure if it still is or not.

The bandstand is the largest in Europe. It isn't very big, especially if you're sat on it with a 40 piece concert band.

I went a couple of years ago but got so drunk I can't remember where I went. It was very nice though. Hope that helps.

I've only been to Trier nearby, which has, I believe, the most amount of Roman remains north of the Alps, including the Porta Nigra, an intact Roman town gate, and a cool amphitheatre and set of baths, and is generally rather ace.

I like Trier. The Porta Nigra is, as you say, pretty spectacular considering how damn old it is.

Clairvaux in the North is nice. A very picturesque village.

My ex and I went camping there some years back with my brother and his wife. After eating out one night, we ended up in Le Bar Sportif. With virtually every beer my borther and I had, we got "given" a schnaps of some sort. Red ones, blue ones, yellow ones, green ones..... After a while our wives left us to it, but we didn't realise they'd taken all our money with them. Come the end of the night we were absolutely slaughtered, and were presented with a £60 bar bill which neither of us could settle. After much discussion in my drunken Dutch which they vaguely understood, we managed to explain the campsite we were in and promised to go back the next day to settle up.

Weeeeeeeeel, it was our last night in Luxemburg, soooooooooo, if you do go to Clairvaux and end up in the Le Bar Sportif, could you settle my bar bill please ?

A nice place to visit is Vianden, a bit wholesome but nice scenerey, nice town, cable cars, and a visit to a Hydro Electric power station if you like. Well I enjoyed it.

Another nice place to visit is Echternach, from what I can remember it was a sleepy little town not far from the German border...mind you most of Luxembourg is near the border!

Very pretty country, speak a strange language that is a mixture of Flemish and French, think they call it Luxembourgish...if you can speak French, German or English come to think of it, you will be understood easily.

It is a country that you can do pretty much in one day, from a tourist point of view, worth going to Bastogne in Belgium to the museum about the Battle of the Bulge...a truly humbling experience, taught me what the reality of the second war really was like for the soldiers on the ground.

Food should be good, people really friendly and a beautiful little country...enjoy your stay.
