Luke Shaw - £4m?

Apparently Luke Shaw, Southampton's England u17 international player is valued at £4m, this despite not having played a single first team game! Palarse also valuing Zaha at £10m! And yet some people on this site talk about letting Noone go for under 1m and Dunk for something similar. Isn't it about time we got real and stopped selling our players for a song (eg Bennett, Crofts)?

This is partly based on the reputation's of their respective academies.

Wait until our academy has been up and running for 15-20 years, with a proven track record, and our youth players will automatically be seen as more valuable.

Southampton (and Palace to some degree) have a proven record of bringing players through their acedemys who are regular internationals or at least regular in the Prem. We don't.

Hence Walcott and Oxo-Chamberlain going for massive fees. However, if you compare Luke Shaw to Jake F-C, what does that value Jake at?

He's not REALLY valued at £4m though is he. He's valued at whatever somebody is preapred to pay for him, be that £20million or 36pence.

Well they have to let Arsenal know how much they need to offer, dont they.

If he's that good, maybe he should have played against us on the 2nd. Davis looked like he'd dipped his gloves in liquid soap at half-time.

Precisely my point - based on our most recent transfers probably about £750k, if that. And i don't buy this guff about the value of players coming from Development Squads. Sure, both Soton and Palarse have got excellent youth systems but surely its the potential of an individual that determins their value not the fact that they come from a development squad?

John Dunlop trained a horse at Arundel called Snaffi Dancer. He was bought very young for £10m, a world record. He went lame and never ran a race. Ended up going out to stud. I guess that's where analogy ends.

Quite, the same with many players. They are PRICED at £xm, the value is whatever someone will pay for the player.

My car would probably fetch, for example, £7k. If I "value" it at £15k, the car isn't suddenly worth £15k, it's value is still £7k as that's what people will pay for it. No one will buy it for £15k (although they're welcome to ;) :D)

I don't buy that argument either, otherwise Crewes youngsters would have demanded much higher fees when they were churning them out like they were on a conveyor belt a few years ago and Crewe would be a very rich club indeed

So can't the club who already have that player have a value of him being there? If they take into account things like revenue that the player may bring in through merchandise or maybe the extra tickets that might be sold by their playing and so on it could well be higher and hence why they don't sell if they get an offer they consider too low. Then you may have to take into account the process of replacing them and any costs that may incur.

If the only offer we get for Dunk is 50p, should we take it as thats all he is worth because that is all somone is prepared to pay? Or is he worth more to the club by staying here?
