Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I could tip nothing but losers for the next 10 years and still be on a high, having reached what was almost certainly the pinnacle of my punting and racing career on Saturday night. Not only was I at Santa Anita to see the Europeans wipe the floor with the Americans in the Breeders' Cup, I was also in a winning syndicate for the Pick6. My contribution to picking the horses was nil, I just chucked in 50 dollars to make up a thousand-dollar perm, but bugger me if we didn't get to the last leg with Curlin, Raven's Pass and Tiago all running for us.

Curlin, obviously, would have dented the dividend somewhat, though a winner's a winner in a bet like that. Still, when the commentator started going loopy about Curlin as he made a move around the turn, we could all see Frankie lobbing along in his wake. The 13 of us in the bet went abso-fuckin-lutely doolally as he pounded up the straight. The dividend for a $2 bet was a little over $55,000.
