Very interesting thread as in October I am having week in Vegas with gf, then long weekend in Evanstown just outside Chicago with my cousin who's doing his phd at NorthWestern. Beforehand though it was £6 to have a 3 night stopover LAX and so thought rude not to as flight went via there anyway. On my tod so these tips will be useful and maybe can give us / me a bit more detail yourself and recommendations after your stay? Cheers

i second manhattan beach as the place to go.
santa monica is more of a regular downtown if you want mainstream shopping, etc but manhattan beach is a really nice spot, beach is nicer, good food and some boutiquey shops. i'd rent a cheap car or take a cab and hang out there for a couple of days!

In Hermosa Beach go to Martha's restaurant. Top food, it's really excellent

BYF - Nicks brother here.Didnt know thery were delayed in NZ. I do know they are itching to get out to the US though.
I defo recommend Hermosa beach. I found nightlife and area to be better than Manhatten although both nice. Get yourself into Sharkys bar,start using the old english accent with the local girls and thats half the battle won straight away.
If you get the chance drive to Vegas. Well worth it even if just staying in a motel 6. Did it few years back when coaching out that way, you dont even spend time in your room so you can do it cheap.

Inglewood and Lennox are both nice and very close to the airport.
i love it when i see "lads" and "grown men" who are on there own for a bit in another country, out of the comfort zone, and want somewhere "safe."
i have lived in many countries around the world, and have seen so many "english tough guys" look like lost little lambs so many times.....i always remember this when i see a group of english lads being all hard and tough in a group in their patch.
mate, go where YOU want, go somewhere for AN EXPERIENCE, and TO LEARN something......everything else is bullshit and a waste of energy.

oh bore off mate. I hate people like you preaching as if your some epic adventurer who is the only person to have done what you have.
You would have every right to want a reccomendation for a "safe" place. After all 2 english lads were gunned down in florida this year for straying into the wrong area - and i know from experience there are enough of those places in LA ( and other areas of the world)
i know you cant play if safe all your life, but i would say getting a car and pissing about around the West coast of the US is an EXPERIENCE and giving an opportunity to LEARN something - better than a week in Marbella anyway.
And where did BYF state he was a hard guy - we all know hes a pussy.

Stayed in Evanston few years back. Great beaches and some good golf up that way. Also home to where they filmed home alone, Uncle buck etc so you can see those houses, which is ok i suppose.
Access to Chicago is great too and you havent been, its a great great city.

Oh yeah. I know the windy one with all the beautiful flower beds zig-zagging down the hill. Went past it on the cable car ride when we were there.

Am booking a hotel end of this week for my trip I mentioned (Sat 15th to Tuesday 18th is the LA section. Only get Sunday and Monday as full days though before it's onto Vegas). I had thought Venice beach and Santa Monica but probably touristy and over priced plastic? and am now looking into Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach after this thread. Might be more of a true American experience and meet locals not tourists?
I don't drive but am a fit sporty 28 year old so happy to cycle up north one day to check out my original location and spend the other day and two halves down where suggested. Would have been up for a professional sporting event and had guessed baseball or college sports (UCLA?) would be the most likely options but not sure how accessible any would be from my 'base' and given days am there? Lived in South Carolina for a year after Uni so up on all the American Sports etc.
Other location suggested to me was Huntingdon Beach but think is far too far south for me really? Was suggested by an experienced surfer and while I'm a swim teacher and keen to learn, not sure 'surf city' is the place? Seems an odd thing to do with my maybe only chance to see LA but surfing could be a good weekend. Anyone recommend it as an area for other pursuits?
Keen to hear how the OP got on! Also any other suggestions given my slightly different situation. Oh and in case I didn't mention it, I don't drive.

Well, if you are cycling around the Hermosa/Redondo area, the bike path runs for several miles and you can head north, go around Marina Del Rey and take in Venice and Santa Monica too. I think it's about 15 miles worth of path and mostly runs along the sand.
Huntington Beach IS nice, but Newport Beach is just a couple of miles further south and there's way more to do and see there. Cafes on the harbour, Balboa Island, loads of good bars and stuff.
Enjoy, and bring back some stories

I did a very similar trip two years ago (apart from San Diego) and from my brief time in LA the best advice I can give is to stay away from Venice Beach. Full of smack heads begging for cash and the beach isn't upto that much either. San Francisco on the other hand, is a wonderful place. I've been to quite a few cities in America, but if I had to choose one it'd be San Fran. And I realise the irony of a Brighton fan 'raving' about another massively gay city, but I can assure you that is not the reason I like it there...
