The peer, who lives in Brighton, had claimed £260,000 over seven years to cover the cost of accommodation in London.

However, he did not stay in London but commuted each day from Brighton, claiming a further £41,000 in the same period to cover the cost of train and taxi fares.

A Labour source told The Independent: "Steve has told fellow members of the Labour Lords group he plans to step down from his role as Opposition Chief Whip early in 2018 once a replacement has been elected by our Peers.

Him and that other letch Caplin will still attach themselves to Peter Kyle and any campaign he might have to fight in the coming years, imho Peter should stay well clear of these two!!

Not only an embarrassment to the Labour Party but an insult to every tax payer living in the city! What a wanker!

Whichever way you look at it someone's not getting VFM from her employment, either the council's being short changed or the government is.Whats not in doubt is us as taxpayers and ratepayers one way or another are being shafted.

Tony Greenstein has quite a bit of history with Lord Bassam, they're certainly not besties. This is from Greenstein's blog last year.

Greenstein has been suspended for alleged anti-Semitism and says there's a witch-hunt against him but his Twitter account is littered with the word "Zio". Shami Chakrabarti's report referred to that word as “a term of abuse, pure and simple, and should not in my view have any place in the vocabulary of Labour members, whether online, in conversation or anywhere else”. I don't think he's doing his defence any favours here.

I admit i have never heard that term myself i had to google it, totally agree with you it has no place.

Just a hunch but having read what he thinks of Bassam, I reckon if he had any more dirt he'd have gone public on it by now.

He maybe holding it back if he has for the final nail in the coffin

Is he not Jewish himself ? Are not anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism two different things ? I guess that's another debate.

I believe he is and you're right, anti-Zionism isn't the same as anti-Semitism but the word 'Zio' is something altogether different and intended to be offensive.

Hilarious listening to all the self righteous " holier than thou " whingeing on here. I bet virtually everyone posting here has left work early, falsely claimed overtime/ expenses or stolen from their employer at some time or other... Remember " every other bu@@er does it " is the old refrain.

And don't reply with the old " But he's an elected MP, we expect betterfrom those in high office " ... Just look at all those earning a packet in the City or in exec positions, they are all doing this too, it's called capitalism.

Hand on heart , straight no for this.

So by your logic everyone /the majority steal or beat their partners etc then its ok?

If I had been caught fiddling expenses at the company i worked for they would have sacked me and that would be the least punishment .
