The vocals on this are different class. Fifteen years after this was released she was crooning on Pebble Mill at One. Don't be gulled by the gentle start. . . .

She was a ballad singer before Vinegar Joe too - singles were always being pushed (without success by ageing DJs like David Jacobs and Pete Murray. It wasn't just her vocals that were a feature of Vinegar Joe ....... great live in 1972 they were!

.....and Robert Palmer wasn't too chuffed because he was meant to be the main singer/attraction (so I understood at the time).......and Elkie went back to MOR.........

RIP Billy MacKenzie. Voice of an angel.

The original version was one of the very few singles amongst my parents' rather impoverished musical legacy which is somewhat surprising considering they were still teenagers in the 50s and still in their 20s in the 60s. As a result I'm very familiar with this single as I played it quite a lot for want of anything else to play. Because of that it's always had a strong association with my childhood. The only other single I remember is Acker Bilk's "Stranger on the Shore." (edit: I almost forgot: and Rolf Harris's "Two Little Boys". The only album I remember was a box set by the Seekers. It didn't get any better than that. And I still cringe when I remember the time my father came home one afternoon proudly bearing a copy of Judge Dredd's cover version of "Je t'Aime" (B-side "Look a Pussy") :ffsparr: the first single he'd bought in nearly ten years.

I didn't realise The Associates did a cover version (Kites not Look a Pussy). As you say, voice of an angel.

This is a forgotten gem for me.
I've always had a soft spot for France Gall (French yé-yé singer and 1965 Eurovision Song Contest winner) as this single was amongst my mother's singles collection (it was basically my mother's single collection).
My affection for France Gall was reignited in more recent years when I discovered that as a still innocent and naive 20 year old she had been innocently led astray by that old reprobate Serge Gainsbourg (to whom I made an indirect reference in my previous post above) when totally oblivious to her at the time he had induced her to release one of his songs about fellatio ("Les Sucettes": she thought it was a song about lollipops despite appearing in a video with some very phallic depictions of that particular confectionery). When she learnt the truth she went into hiding for months feeling totally ashamed.

This gem is from this four track single which I often played as a child and is a song you will probably all be familiar with but not necessarily by France Gall. Her voice makes me go all gooey....

The only other single I remember is Acker Bilk's "Stranger on the Shore."

That was produced by Denis Preston, the father of 'Tracey Spenser' of The Molesters, and various other Brighton punk/pop bands of the late 70s (e.g., Smarties) with whom I shared a flat for a brief period.

This is a forgotten gem, because the CD was stolen by someone working in our house. Heard it recently for the first time in over 20 years.

Just heard this on Radio 2

Takes me back to Folkestone Beach (Shakespeare Cliffs)in 1966, discussing the chances of a channel tunnel actually happening ( which was being discussed on the news having had the green light a couple of years before) whilst listening to a small transistor radio. Simpler times, this song was then played, strange the things us oldies remember.
