EXTREME RUNNING - LONDON TO BRIGHTON TRAIL RUN - 20th SEPTEMBER 2009 What is extreme running? Simply, running a very long way under very difficult circumstances. Usually, this takes place on trails or tracks across hills, fields, fences, stiles and fords, often in quite remote places. Who does it? ‘Ultra’ runners (an ‘ultra’ being any run further than normal marathon distance), who run 30, 50 or even 100 miles in 24 hours at various locations all around the world. The sport is growing as people challenge themselves to train for, and endure, very long periods of significant exercise. We here at Extreme Running organise runs in the UK for newcomers to the sport who want to stretch themselves, experienced ultra runners and those preparing for the Marathon De Sables and other extreme challenges around the world.

Running long distances across country is not just running a road marathon and a bit more. Just thirty miles across country is like doing two marathons and, as the number of miles increases, the physical and mental challenge becomes even more extreme. Check out our website to get a taste of what we do and meet our runners on our message board.

On Sunday 20th September 2009 at 6am, Blackheath in London will see this year’s competitors start the 56 mile, self navigating (maps provided), challenge through Kent, Surrey and Sussex, as they push on to Brighton. They will be driven by a combination of hardened muscle from training, experience from pushing themselves to the limit in other events, food and drink for fuel taken on during the route and, most importantly, the sheer guts to keep them going to the finish when anyone else (arguably more sensible) would give up.

This year’s London to Brighton Trail Run will be tough on every part of the competitor’s physical being as mile after mile piles up behind them, stained with the blood, sweat and tears of the runners. Even if you’re not ready to join us for the run itself this year, please come and celebrate the success of all the finishers from 2 to 7 pm at Brighton. For all enquiries and if you would like to help us on the day, please contact us at info@extremerunning.org or Extreme Running

The Downsman Hike that I organise for Scouts is a maximum of 82 miles along the South Downs Way. A couple of years back, a team of three completed the whole distance in under 15 hours. One of the team did a London to Brighton run the following day! That one was a road race, though.

At some point in the year, there is also a South Downs run that a lot of people complete.

Far from impossible.
