London Road even too pikey for Aldi

The Open Market is one of the gems of Brighton. If that could get a bit of investment then the rest would follow.

There's an article in the Guardian today about how Aldi is attracting middle-class shoppers so it probably does have its eye on a more upmarket area. It looks like Tesco will have a free run then.

I got this flyer through my door last month and parts of it make depressing reading! Why the f*** do we need a Tesco down London Road?
Have a look at the website there are some good ideas in there, but Tescos, give me strength!
What we need down London Road is a department store like John Lewis, that would improve the area massively.

Would be a boon if London Road was traffic-free, but where would it be diverted to? I'd also love to see us get a QUALITY market area, as opposed to the sad excuse that's masquerading as one for years. It's a disgrace that our council doesn't seem to give a shit about the area: it could - & should - be thriving. Pisses me right off!

newcastle had the same problem, they pedestrianised northumberland street, which is smack bang in the middle........where did the traffic go? nowhere, it just reduced congestion in general

worrying about where the traffic will go shouldn't halt the INEVITABLE pedestrianisation

(in my opinion and all that)

Hoping to visit Eastern Eye (five doors along the road from The Branch Tavern) for a taste of their Contemporary Eastern Cuisine. Tho has to be said, don't much fancy their chances of still being here by the end of the year. Our fault, not theirs.

I've been to Eastern Eye and the food's really nice, and reasonably priced. And I had three beers and they charged me for only one by mistake.

So yes, I would go with your prediction THPP.

Agree with Tommy about Nothumberland Street in Newcastle to some extent -- although Brighton doesn't have a Metro by which to arrive at London Road. And I can't understand why John Lewis haven't moved into Brighton, either. They'd make an absolute KILLING.

Not Lewes
I lived just behind Preston Circus nearly all my life until last year - and I can safely say that I very rarely went south of Richer Sounds on the London Road because of the utter shithole that it is. I really don't miss living around that area.

I had to walk along London Road to Preston Circus yesterday, and it reminded me why I hated it so much. Teenage Mum's hurling abuse at each other/boyfriends/children, skankheads, and just general dregs filled up the street between the open market, and the proposed Aldi site, and it just looks hideous.

I don't know that there is an answer for London Road, because it is going to take some time to shift it's reputation whatever you do. Short of flattening large parts of it, which will cost so much money - this could be the blight of Brighton for many years to come.

I can't believe the number of people who think that London Road is a shit-hole - I think you must have led some very sheltered lives; it's paradise compared to some of the places I've seen.

I know it's a bit tatty but I like it. I'll be shopping there tomorrow as usual; there's nowhere else in Brighton that has cheese as good as the ones on the stall in the market and there's nowhere that serves bread as good as that one in the Turkish shop.

Yeah, I was reading this and wondered if it's the same London Road that I spend every lunch hour on. There's nothing wrong with it: it's got real people (not poncy middle class twats - no offence to anyone) and decently priced shops. I certainly wouldn't call it tatty or run-down, it's definitely better than Lewes Road *shudder*.
