[Football] London football clubs. Biggest and smallest

Completely agree, walk around places like Mitcham, St Helier or Colliers wood in the suburbs and they feel very much like Chelsea strong holds and were that way long before Abromvich's reign. This obviously impacts on attendances of the established South London clubs but still for such a large population to not have a local 'big' team is strange IMO.

If you look at outer South London with Sutton, Croydon and Bromley there's a combined population of around 1.5 million and plus the catchment of North Surrey yet the only league team there is Palace who only a mid sized club who generally attract sub 20k crowds.

Bromley is in Kent and I would say is a Charlton area, also Millwall are followed by a few all around SE London.

The double used to be considered winning the FA cup and league in the same year. Has that changed now?

Before Abramahovic arrived. Spurs were the only London team to reach a European championship semi final.

But now Chelsea have surpassed that, so should that not make them bigger, or is Spurs achievement that much greater?

Just saying, having that distinction is something that fans will hold on to, but it may not be reflective of how they're now considered by much of the footballing world.

Another example would be Liverpool fans holding their league title wins up as proof of being bigger than United (whilst it was still a valid claim), but many football fans wouldn't have been around to have seen/remember Liverpool ever having lifted one (I'm in my mid-twenties and I've never seen it). History is important, how you do now, more so.

Fair enough, Palace v Charlton was the most difficult one to conclude on. Charlton have had 34 years in the top division though.

Spurs will be moving into a much bigger ground than Stamford Bridge. Spurs have always had a bigger fan bases. Chelsea's only claim to being a bigger club is all the trophies Abramahovic has bought in the last 10 or so years.

The only thing I would change on this is Palarse and Charlton as I think Charlton were and have been a club with a lot more history and a far bigger following over the years.
The Valley was once the biggest ground in the whole old four divisions 76,000 something I believe.

You missed out bottom placed Barnet. Debatable who is bigger between QPR, Charlton and Palace, all much of a muchness. Fulham have a bigger history than some of the clubs below them but the 4k crowds they used to get pre-Al Fayed doesn't make them big in 'fanbase terms'
