When you speak to someone, you don't actually say "TALK".

So why say "LOL" when you laugh? Unless you actually do exclaim the word "LOL" out loud when you laugh...? Haha is much more logical.

Because LOL means "laughing out loud". It's an acronym like BTW, FWIW, AFAIK, IDK, FFS and all the others. It just makes things quicker.

I know it's an acronym - but it saves ONE letter over "haha", or is more effort than just writing "ha" - which kind of takes away from the point of an acronym.

The other difference, of course, is that before it came into common usage, people never wrote "Laughing Out Loud", whereas people do regularly write - and say - 'by the way', 'for what it's worth', etc etc.

For me any LOL is the symbol of a lull in comedy. They're never to be believed and more a sign of a pity laugh than the hysterics it perhaps first meant to make out.
For me, i'm a heh, a hehe, a haha and a hahaha man, the latter when something actually makes me truly guffaw - that usually involves one of the dressed dogs threads or the tale of someone pooing themselves.

Ooooh, an opportunity to show off a bit of knowledge I picked up recently...

One should only use 'latter' (or 'former') when there are two things in your list, so with the 4 options you have above, 'last' should be used instead of 'latter'.

(where's the smiley/emoticon for "not having a pop, just passing on an interesting fact I picked up..."?!)
:)

Swindon, but used to be Manila
One exception: You can LOL if you're under 12.*

(* - under 12s can't use NSC.)

NSC is way to and immature at times, it needs 'adulting ' up,,,not as to have countless swear words etc but stop all these ' what would you do if'.......what 'your best fart' etc .....

I agree with Bozza ban LOL, and all the other silly internnet chat room acronyms..

Grumpy old man on holiday in vegas!

Ah cheers for that. I'll log that ruling for future usage. Handy (Peters).

The worst thing I've heard recently, is someone describing themselves as "the Archbisop of Banterbury". It was a wonder they didn't get a roundhouse to the face for that.
