If you look from Elm Grove to the school (when it's empty, to avoid being classed as a pervert), it's apparent that William Clarke Park, and the school playing field are an old railway line by the local geography.

Freddie Goodwin, and others have also noted that Old Viaduct Court, and the sheltered housing complex and school opposite on Bonchurch are where the branch extended to. It would appear, that it linked onto the main line where Amplicon is now. This is on the industrial estate that is just below Upper Lewes Crescent, and again from there you can see the boundary of Victorian and newer buildings. Also some of the houses on Hanover leading to the school have tunnel vents in their back gardens.

Yes I am sad. I find local history fascinating.

all i remember is that quite a way into the tunnel it was sealed off with breeze block.
used to go in there when i was a kid around 1980 when the entrance was in the grounds of the coke factory/storage depot and redifusion was on the same estate.

It was worked as a freight line for many years after passenger services were withdrawn, but on the last day of use they ran a few special passenger services to Brighton Station and back, and I went on it. About 1971 I think, without looking it up. Great experience emerging from the long tunnel and then suddenly being so high above Lewes Road.
