Yep, I get it, bimey, you guys are highly strung today for some reason.

The point is, a season ticket costs around £3k per year, but houseprices in London are a damn sight more expensive than 3k, so for a young chap who is still living at home, you might have to sacrifice your WANTS and deal with REALITY.

Very few people actually WANT to commute, but living in London has NEVER been more expensive than it is today

I wouldn't be considering it if I couldn't afford it. As a 23 year old, the London life is quite appealing and spending much of my social life in Burgess Hill is starting to drive me insane. I might as well stay living at home if I wanted to commute.

South is clearly better being cleaner for a start, with more parks/commons & Lido's etc and very importantly nearer the little village that is Brighton +Hove too..

Try East Dulwich mate, i used to live there till recently & work in Clapham/Battersea. The 37 takes half hour to get across from Lordship Lane which has loads of trendy bars/pubs & restaurants. It's really nice & green with the common on one side. Also it's cheap, my ex & i rented a superb two bedroom flat for nine hundred a month, check out thepropertyinn.com. They are useless but have nice cheap properties to rent. It has overground links into London Bridge but does not have a tube. I'm gutted I've moved but am still friends with my ex so around there regularly!

I heard East Dulwich was really expensive. Well, it is to buy, anyway. Cheapest place to buy in south London atm is Plumstead (where I am) but it would be a bugger to commute to Clapham from there.

clearly neither of you have spent any time in South London. Its not too bad, as long as you stay off the nasty estates, but that goes for any where. there are bad bits, SE along the A2 (lewisham, catford) is chavsville and avoid the penge/norwood/crydon area too which is pretty grotty. Bermondsey, Brixton, Camberwell, Peckham can be rough depending on which street your in, very nice one street, shit hole the next.

but Dulwich, like greenwich and blackheath, is like being in country market town, east dulwich and peckham rye off the beaten track is not unlike Brighton or Hove (thought the main street is like a moroccan bazaar). Streatham is a big mixed bag, feels like a town in its own right (ie good and bad). Ive only ever drvien though balham and tooting but people i know who've lived there like it. Wimbledon is tottie city. Then theres the surrey/london border, Epsom, Sutton, Carshlaton, which is very nice. bromley and beckenham on the kent border is nice too, but alot of palace shirts.

Yeah I'm looking at graduate house shares, bedsits tend to be slightly more expensive. From what I've looked at online, 500 seems to be about the norm.

I currently work in Clapham and commute from Hassocks every day but that is starting to get annoying and I don't want to live with my parents forever!

Can anyone recommend good places around South London to live? Clapham itself is quite nice but stupidly expensive even for just a room in a big house share and I don't fancy living and working in the same place.

There are some "rougher" bits of Clapham (like where I live), which I would presume are cheaper.
