Hi.

Yes, you're right. It's a thread where some idiot asks NSC if somewhere is nice to visit.

Basically we want 2 or 3 nights away near/in a city next week. Liverpool keeps popping up.

Firstly - Is it worth going?
Secondly - Any particular stuff to do?

And yes, I want to go to the Cavern.

I work in Liverpool. What sort of thing are you looking for? The city centre is very smart and good for shopping.

There are plenty of decent hotels too. Loads of museums, art galleries etc. You can go for a ride on the ferry (although it's a bit choppy today!) and there are bus tours if that's your thing.

I recommend wandering around the Albert Dock (bars, restaurants, Tate modern).

More than enough bars in town for a good evening out.

The Cavern however isn't the original. That got knocked down in the 70s. The current one is opposite where the original was and just a copy.

Let me know if you have any particular questions.

Yes, it's a beautiful city - lots of fine architecture - and not just the cathedrals, both of which are amazing in their way. And while travelling along Hope Street from one to the other, don't miss out on Ye Cracke pub, down a side street about half way along - the haunt of John Lennon while he was at the nearby art school. The Beatle bus tour is a cracking experience too, Penny Lane, Strawberry fields, the Beatles' homes and all that - well worth doing.

Also, don't miss the ferry to Birkenhead - finest view of the famous Liverpool waterfront, and the possibility of a heritage tram ride the other side if that floats your boat at all.

True, it is a copy, but to be fair it's a pretty good copy, and well worth a visit - it's just like the original except it hasn't got a funny smell and the floors aren't sticky.............

It's pretty nice, been up there with the Mrs a few times.

We stayed at the Mariott. Got a normal room and then the night before checked availability and managed to upgrade to a suite for only £25 more than I had paid - well worth it. Great city with lots to do and generally friendly people as well. However the cavern club was a massive disappointment and just full of drunk locals at 2pm the one time I went there.

If you want to impress the missus with a nice meal, I'd recommend Panoramic 34. It's bloody high but offers amazing/romantic views of Liverpool - worth going early evening as the city lights start appearing. There is a dress code I think,

The Cavern is well worth a visit, have a few beers and try and see a live act. Also nip down to Albert Dock, loads to do there. The main shopping centre bit is pretty generic and best avoided.

I'm currently working up this way too, so depends on what you're looking for.

The Titanic hotel is really nice, but quite pricey and is about 20/25 minute walk into the city centre. If you're looking for a night out, I like the bars on Seal Street - the old fashioneds in Berry and Rye on Berry Street are a highlight for me. As mentioned earlier, I also recommend checking out the Albert Dock.

The city isn't short for places to eat, a couple of my favourites are Miss Kitty's, Mowgli, Roja Pinchos or there's Bacaro on Castle Street.

The Beatles museum is in Albert Dock, and also has a mock up of the Cavern. Albert Dock is well worth a visit, apart from that.

The Titanic Hotel is also nothing to do with the Titanic. If The Titanic is your thing stay at 30 James Street which is the old HQ of the White Star Line! Also very central.

Mathews Street (where the Cavern Club is) is fantastic for a night out spent many a drunken night there.
For nostalgia take the Mersey Ferry to Birkenhead but don't bother getting off its a bit grim that side of the Mersey and the Fairy is right Bootle is certainly an interesting area although you probably wont want to take the missus there.
Be interesting to know if they still do a roaring trade of dodgy goods in the pubs.
I really enjoyed my 14 months living in Liverpool (Birkenhead).

From what I've seen a small part of the centre is lovely and most of the rest is grim, I stand (hope) to be corrected though.

Been up there twice this year, fast becoming a favourite city. As mentioned both Panoramic 34 and The Titanic (the wrecked building next door is where they filmed Peaky Blinders) both recommended. Vibrant place.

I've spent many a night out in Liverpool - It's a cracking night albeit my preferred venues of Thomas Rigby's (Live Horse Racing), The Leo Casino over the dock and Angels (Very Reasonably priced for that kind of thing) probably isn't what you are looking for if you re going away with your missus.

That Panoramic restaurant that Biscuit mentions is very good albeit I can't remember much about it and was told I wasn't welcome back (we'd been drinking very heavily at the races).

For a more reasonably priced restaurant I used to work near the Italian restaurant below which is very good - Probably as good as value for money as you will get anywhere. The bars around that area are pretty good as well. Matthews street = Slightly better version of West Street.
