An article, albeit from 2012, showing that not all Germans are happy with the 50 +1 rule. Bayern obviously are as they are the dominant force in the Bundesliga.

In the early 2000s despite the 50 + 1 rule, Dortmund had massive debt.

The financial controls in Germany hasn't prevented German clubs going insolvent.

https://www.soccernomics-agency.com.../uploads/2019/01/insolvency_Germany_final.pdf

The conclusion suggests that insolvency in German football is not dissimilar to that in England.

Insolvency not dissimilar and no German club joined the ESL. I would take that.

So on the basis that a few clubs have fans that are disillusioned with their owner then everyone else is forced to go down the 50 + 1 model!!

Like I mentioned on another post, Barcelona are owned 100% by fans and that hasn't stopped them building up a horrendous debt.

They probably have but I'm guessing they're 'new' fans, not legacy fans so Glazer will think he's safe.

Exceptions can always be found, but the fact is that the ESL or similar should never be allowed to happen. Football finance is rotten to the core and needs to be better controlled. You are thinking too parochial and need to think at the game of football level

From the BBC gossip bit

Manchester United's owners are ready to sanction a £90m bid for Tottenham and England captain Harry Kane, 27, as they attempt to quell the recent fan unrest.

Interesting to see if those supporters can be bribed or not.

Harry Kane in Man Utd's team would make them formidable. I hope it doesn't happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. It would, of course, shut up their fans. And they'd all be quick to snap up Kane shirts.

So because of a few exceptionally bad owners everyone else has to change. Football finance should be controlled by rigorously enforced FFP not by have fans control 51% of whatever the club does (it doesn't work in Spain). Let owners put money into clubs but not as loans. Don't let clubs sell their grounds etc etc.

As EP will tell you, there is nothing wrong with debt in football as long as it is serviceable.

I don't think it is my approach that is narrow minded. You seem to think 50 + 1 will solve all footballs problems.

As I said before, the governing bodies should not concede any ground to the big clubs of Europe (they should remove the stupid rule for the champions league about past performance).

There should be a betting levy on the gambling industry to support lower league and grass roots.

Agreed. I am amazed / surprised that the PL have not taken this in-house and built their own platforms to sell out directly to consumers, cutting out Sky, BT Sport etc. The US have been doing that for a long time

I expect they want to be 100% sure that they've the ability to provide a sufficiently competitive product, to enough customers, to cover the cost of running it. Would they bring in as much directly as they would from the myriad broadcasters who currently pay for their product? It's a risk. But I'm sure that they'll be working on something.

I'd get into bed with Amazon. Their broadcasts are already on a par with BT and Sky, in my opinion.

of course they can. a few might continue the protest against money leaving the club, most dont care what happens to the money as long as there are marquee signings each year. fans dont complain when their clubs spends millions only when they dont.

Inclined to agree. A very small percentage of MU fans were involved in the protest.

I keep hearing that the Glazers have sold the 'soul' of the club. Exactly what was the soul of the club? As far as I know during my football supporting decades, they were know during the 70s and 80s as a club with a large away following pretty much all intent on causing trouble. They didn't win a league trophy for over 20 years and got relegate by 'one of their own'! They were the instigators of money grabbing when they got the rules changed so home teams kept the revenue rather than share with the away team. They have always used their financial muscle to their own advantage rather than the football family. They have always threatened breakaway super leagues (probably the main reason the European knockout cup became the Champions League).

The problem for them now is that they aren't winning things like they used to for the first 20 years of the EPL.

Man Utd aren't going to go bust. I have more sympathy for the likes of Blackpool, Wigan, Bury and a few others in the lower leagues who have faced extinction rather than a brief trophyless run.

Must admit I have been dubious of their protest, especially on the day that if they lost to Liverpool would have given the title to City, seems all a bit convienent to get the game postponed

I have just seen Utd have to play Thursday - Sunday - Tuesday - Thursday that'll get Olly whining - get them used to the championship if the PL had the guts to relegate them

The ‘few bad owners’ are the ones that are important but you cannot apply any ownership rule to them alone. Your naively is shocking.

No. The moguls need to be controlled. If they are not, then they will attempt an ESL type thing again.

You keep banging on about this but you conveniently ignore the fact that Real Madrid and Barcelona are both fan owned but are well and truly financially ****ed. They've attempted the ESL before and like this time they have failed. However, this time they are left in a weaker position.

Your naivety is that you want to apply Corbynesque socialism to football. It's pathetic.

They clearly haven’t learnt.

They believe that what is good for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus is good for football as a whole.

UEFA should go after these three. The Champions League is strong enough without them. Kick them out.
