What a complete PR disaster this announcement has been. Fans of Man U and Tottenham making statements against it, Boris, doing the same.
Alex Ferguson making a statement against it, not even consulted by the Man U board.
The owners and the CEOs of these clubs deserve everything that is coming their way over the next days/weeks. They have misjudged this massively.
City will backtrack first, then Arsenal and Spurs. It will collapse, but it will leave a very bad taste in the mouth.

Spot on and after this are we expected to just carry on knowing the total disregard these clubs had for the rest of us and them chancing it with this suggestion. People may laugh at Gary Neville's suggestion about points being deducted but surely there ought to be some sort of sanction.

Makes me happy that I'm returning to the local non league game next season where the real game exists. No over paid prima donnas - just local guys playing for my local side.

VAR has killed my passion for football at the top level (which was my sole reason for giving up my ST after 27 consecutive years) but announcements like tonights (although never unlikely to involve the Albion) just make me feel I want to go back to the grass roots of the game even more, which is not only cheaper but a far more enjoyable experience.

Football has finally shot itself in the foot (if it hadn't done so already) and I for one wouldn't watch a Super League or pay to watch it, even if it did happen. I gave up on the watching the Champions League a few years ago so for me this will be no great loss. It will be a sad day if this does happen, but all things come to an end sometime but it's just a shame that the corporate dollar seems to mean more than just playing a simple game of football.

Hang on! We are 29 pages in on this thread and is it just me being a fxxkwit or are loads of other people also thinking that the involvement of these clubs in a Super League meant that they would no longer be competing in the Premier league? Lots of posters comments clearly suggest that. However, is the reality is that all that is being proposed is a rival to the EUEFA champions league?

The FA, La Liga and Serie A have all said they will be banned if they agree to this. The players may also not be able to play for their countries.

Absolute scum, I'm calling the PL and FA to kick the lot of them out. Now.

Good luck with that.

Notice how quiet FIFA have been for starters.

All of the domestic leagues and UEFA have already issued a statement saying that if this happens, these clubs will be banned from domestic competition and all players barred from playing for their countries.

And 15 teams are guaranteed to be in it every year forever.

All this talk of sanctions and banning players from world cups etc reminds me of the early days of one day cricket. The sanctions didn't stop it then and wont now. The only way this can be stopped is via the fans making it so toxic that no one wants their brands associated with it, either via sponsorship or tv advertising.

You're misremembering here. There was no talk of sanctions or banning players from one-day cricket - the early tournaments were highly successful with full support of the relevant authorities.

What you're probably thinking of is Kerry Packer's World Series. This did lead to bans and threats of sanctions but there's no comparison between the two. Packer's operation came about because cricketers were woefully underpaid and TV rights were being sold for two bob. No-one could possibly say the Big Six footballers are underpaid or that TV rights are sold cheaply.

It's also worth noting that the Packer series quickly died a death and the players returned to regular cricket. The novelty wore off rapidly as fans regreted the lack of competition. Players got better pay; the clubs got more money and the fans enjoyed proper competition again. I can't see that happening in this case.

Likely to become a closed shop which will damage the domestic league in the long term as the likes of Leicester who won the Prem a few years ago presumably would never get a chance to play in this new league if they won the Prem again, as they or anyone else would not be considered one of the 'big six'. I could see eventually these clubs coverting this into a full European league eventually doing away with the need to participate in their respective domestic leagues. Start of a slippery slope?

They all have to get written permission from The Premier league as per the Premier league rules. That won't happen so if they do go ahead they will most likely have to resign their Premier League places.
