Ello,

Booked a week in Lisbon in May and now looking to flesh out plans. Going to do three nights in Lisbon then head to the beach somewhere. Advice on the beach bit wold be helpful, currently looking at just along in Cascais.

Cheers!

In Lisbon at night i would recommend heading for the Bairro Alto area which is all narrow, cobbled streets packed with little bars. Ace

I didn't see the beach, i'm no help at all, sorry.

Lisbon is a great city for a 3 day visit.
As usual a decent guide book will tell you the must see stuff but the atmosphere of Lisbon what I enjoyed most with all the little bars and restaurants.
In fact I like all of Portugal a very underestimated country for a 2 week summer holiday, I love the Brazillian influence which makes it so different to Spain.
Oh and Sardines, I love Sardines.

mmmm Barro Alto is certainly very atmospheric, and as you say laden with small bars and eating places. Some of it tragically was burned down in a fire not so many years ago.

Estoril, with it's casino, & site of the Portuguese GP is a lovely place to relax, as is Cascais, both easily reachable by train from Lisbon, and both with beatiful beaches.

The Lisbon area was the venue for the Albion pre-season tour in 1988/89. Had a great time!

Lisbon's fantastic. Make sure you stop for a pasteis de belem (custard tart) and a glass of port or a coffee at the place on Rossio square. The tarts are served hot from the oven and they're amazing.

For excellent petiscos (Portuguese tapas) check out Tapa Bucho in Bairro Alto. Maruto is good if you're near the cathedral. As is Da Prata 52.

Sesimbre was nice. Good beach, the only tourists are from Portugal, so if that floats your boat.... Lots of great seafood restaurants there too..

Cascais is a beautiful seaside resort, somehow not spoilt by tourism. Thoroughly recommend it.

Also highly recommend a day-trip to the 'fairy-tale' mountain town of Sintra, about 30 minute bus-ride from Cascais.

Cracking city, visited recently and along the coast to Cascais, visited the Paula Rego museum there and a couple of beaches, coves reached by walking via the old town restaurants and lanes. Lisbon is easily and best explored by foot, within a few days you should get to know all the district's quite well as it's quite compact. Public transport very cheap can buy a cardeneta ? for tram which includes train to Cascais and will get you up the steep hilly areas to the castle and around Alto etc. Think was about £10/15 for ten journeys ! One of the tram rides also serves as a 'tourist' route to explore Alfama, an area which likens a favela though very safe with some eateries/ outdoor grills. May well go back myself in June. A couple more positives..the street and pavement tiles are amazing and the ladies appear to really make an effort to be stylish, very chic even during the day in some areas.

loved the place

as many have said Bairro Alto is excellent and really worth having a few drinks there.

we had surf lessons for 2 hours and it was great value - toughest thing I've ever done mind, not easy in the Atlantic!

not too pricey either from memory, apart from when we attempted to get in to the Jon Malkovich owned club and was asked to pay £125.....apparently if you're not local or they don't like you that's the amount they ask for.

I just spent a week with a mate who's lived in Portugal for the last 20 years, mostly south of the river that Lisbon is on. Its my favourite city in the world with brilliant food and wine, interesting museums and buildings, beautiful people and great beaches and surf. For a more windswept beach head for Guincho north of Cascais or the beaches to the south of the river at Costa Caparica. Try and get a ticket to see Benfica, although as they're known as the Eagles, maybe their rivals Sporting.

Really enjoyed Lisbon with the gf, pleasantly cheap, especially eating out if you eat where the local workingclass eat (eg at Restaurant Super Mario, simple, cheap food). Also, some quirky museums like: the Tram Museum, the Electricity Museum and the pub filled with Action Man figures. 4 hour walking tour was superb also (run by students). Lovely city.

A really mad place is the Pavilhao Chines, which is like a bar inside a junk shop, full of cabinets of dinky toys. Utterly bonkers.

Cheers all, some good stuff to go on. Cascais sounds like the one.

And don't worry, we're booked outside of the season.

Go to Costa da Caparica,no tourists just Portuguese. It is only 30 minutes from Lisbon, travel over the old bridge and easy to find.
Atlantic coast so can be a bit windy and sea temp is fresh any time of the year.

There is a strange scent that pervades over much of the city. Not a great deal different from parts of Amsterdam.

And if you're young(ish) male you will be offered the scented product multiple times each day. As well as a variety of other substances.
