LinkedIn: what is the purpose?

Brilliant tool. Got my last three jobs through it by ex-collegues contacting me. When job hunting it's far more useful that those shite websites like monster and of course it's far far far better than recruitment agencies !

Some guy kept offering me a job through linked in around 2/3 higher salary as well but was never interested at this stage of my life. When reality dawned he asked me to recommend someone else, is that how recruitment agents work ?

If you say you're not interested, they'll almost always ask if you know anyone who might be - always looking to add people to their database.......

I'm on it even though I did not sign up, which is actually quite annoying. I get regular emails from people I know asking to be my friend or linked professional or whatever, which I obviously ignore as I have no way of accessing my account even if I wanted to. Ignoring people I know who have made contact is a bit embarrassing as presumably they think I am ignoring them when in fact I just didn't sign up in the first place. I wonder if anyone else has an account created for them by LinkedIn. Personally I think LinkedIn is a total waste of time and space. Hopefully it will disappear at some point soon.

Can't see how you're on it if you didn't sign up - you have to create a profile, a log-on, provide an email address etc.

I joined up a few years ago when I knew I would need to start looking for another job (office restructure) and use it as a good way of keeping tabs on former colleagues and acquaintances. I have used it to contact former team members who might want a change of job if we have a vacancy and also to offer business opportunities.

I don't get much hassle from agencies but I have kept my contact details on there fairly minimal and I don't accept invites from people I don't know.

The problem with it now is people posting Facebook style rubbish on there which didn't happen in the early days which devalues it as a business tool.

More likely that it's a Linked-In bot that's trawled the email address books of people you know and sent out auto sign-up requests.
I get sent them too and just as dazzer6666 said, unless you've actually signed up & created a profile a Linked-In account open in your name won't exist.

I've made many contacts and secured my current job off the back off it. I've also used it as a recruitment tool when looking for hiring a specialism into my team. For me it's a very useful tool. Like most things you get out what you put in.

That's nice that you can hire a specialism.

Personally I would hire a specialist, that is someone that has a specialism, or in old language someone that specialises in a subject.

I use it constantly, I use it for marketing myself and my company as well as keeping up with market developments. I don't use it to head hunt people. I do use it to advertise jobs but purely from a marketing perspective.
