Yea, very boring to remember why you have your freedom ain't it.
With all those *******s who lost there liberty and lives fighting for it reminding you of it, how inconsiderate of them.

Don't start all that mate, I respect the people who fought in both world wars and continue to fight so let's not try and paint me as some ingrate who has no respect. I didn't say I found any of it boring did I? So you can stop all that rubbish right there.

" I get bored by the sensationalism of it all" certainly gives the impression you find it boring.

Hopefully the events will continue for 4 years and it will provide a sense of perspective as to how long the slaughter continued. By that time we probably will have been promoted, relegated and will be trying to get up again.

I am very fortunate in the fact that my grandfather survived WW1, and my father survived WW2, otherwise I wouldn't be here.

I'm happy to mark occasions, I always attend remembrance service, wear my poppy. I find that particular understated and appropriate. The commentary on the news about today's events is very reminiscent of the whole Diana circus. Yes, the event should be marked but this is all a bit ridiculous.

You keep enjoying your little storm in a teacup.

Not sure I agree - the Diana thing was sad, with high public interest but I wouldn't try to compare it with the 36+ million casualties (20m injured, 16m killed) estimated to have resulted from WW1.

My Grandfather fought in WW1(Royal Artillery) and my Father in WW2 (Merchant Marine) My Grandmother lost three cousins (out of six from the same family) the first during the early months in France, the second at the Battle of Jutland aboard HMS Tiger and the third at Scarper Flow when his ships magazine blew up. Their ages 35, 18 and 16, so yes there will be a candle on my doorstep

And yet you chose to start a thread like this on the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1. If there was a day to raise awareness and reflect on that era in history, then today would surely be one of those days. Today is a major anniversay of a major event in world history, of course people are going to mark it and to discuss it in TV shows, papers, etc...

This thread just comes across as a look at me being contraversial type thread and makes you seem a bit sad and pathetic

Yes, I do get bored with the sensationalism. That's very different from being bored with remembering what they did for us. I suspect you are aware of that.

Some of you have really missed the point. This forum is infested with jingoistic nitwits at the moment.

So you think that the 100th anniversary of the start of the war is the best and most respectful day to start a thread questioning why the day is being (rightly) marked ? and we are missing the point?

Look at me, pay attention to me, me me me, i'm over here look this way (throws a tantrum) come on i'm being controversial here - you have to look at me, come on give me the attention i so desperately need

Yet look who's trying to turn it into a binfests. Nt trying to be controversial, I was making a point about the sensationalism of the event. But I suppose I should have known some of the more reactionary members would jump all over it and turn it into a row. If a mod's reading please feel free to shut the thread. Didn't want a binfest over such a subject .

Its a difficult one. Marking the occasion is of course necessary and wholly appropriate. But whilst a degree of publicity is needed, the scale which they've gone to is making it feel more like a celebration of what happened rather than a moment for reflection.

Something more understated and genuine would probably be more fitting. However the amount of money the events will raise for charities such as the RBL will be hugely significant, and is not more important to have something that will actually make a difference?

Besides you can still pay your respects regardless, what does is matter what others do?

Not sure why you are all laying into Nibble, will you all be putting a candle out tonight and turning off your lights? No? I didn't think so.

Nothing wrong with the coverage for me, however watching BBC news this morning was a bit tedious, mentioning it constantly every 5 minutes but not telling us a lot apart from the common wealth leaders where meeting in Glasgow.

It needs to be highlighted and it rasies awareness, people at work discussing stories today etc just like on here. the gesture does seem a little odd and more for the people who will do this for the wrong reasons, rather than the riight reasons, pretty certain all social media will be full of candles between 10-11 tonight, just so people can say look at me, arent i good. When they no nothing about it and are doing so where they are being told to.
