16.000? Probably a few thousand taking part,a few thousand watching whilst the rest are at home.Strange they try to keep people from outside of Lewes away.

Sadly my son has been attacked in the past. Some attacks on fire engines are not solely on Bonfire night.

From West Yorkshire Fire service
Our amazing control room staff & Firefighters received over 500 calls & attended 149 incidents last night! 👏

🔥 Of these incidents, 66 were bonfire related.

👍 A huge thank you to the thousands who celebrated safely across this busy period! 😊

👎 Sadly there were a handful of antisocial incidents, which included attacks on our crews.
Fortunately there were no injuries reported.

Attacking firefighters does appear to be a problem in the area .

Whilst I’m with you all the way on this , I have a feeling that GFN has over the years turned into a week long festival.

You a totally correct. The shitfest was going on last weekend and will be happening this coming weekend.

And then of course NYE as well.

the issue is that a while back, maybe 15 odd years ago, it got out of hand with about 80k estimated in town. the trains couldnt cope with everyone leaving and it was decided this had to stop.

As a recent newly resident of Lewes I live a mere 30 seconds from the Commercial Square firesite. I've never really understood the whole bonfire society thing but purchased a programme from the Commercial Square lot and attended their display and found it all rather entertaining, I took the time to look into the history of it all and try and understand it and whilst a lot of it seemed rather odd and bizarre I kind of liked the fact it brings parts of the community together and almost everyone there was having a good time. Far from tourists being discouraged I heard plenty of American, French, Russian, German and other national accents in attendance not to mention numerous UK dialects which proved if you want to attend you can and its really not that difficult as long as you understand the limitations and restrictions well in advance. All that being said I wasn't completely sold on the whole series of events as none of it really jumped out at me in terms of it feeling like a must see thing. It was all right but moving back to BN3 next year and can't see myself having a need to go back and experience it again.

But what about the processions - you surely didn't miss those?!

Left work at midnight in Lewes last night, got caught behind a parade going up the high street letting off constant bangers that were so borderline ear drum perforatingly loud I honestly thought my hearing was going to be permanently affected, especially in a relatively enclosed space hemmed in by buildings on either side. Some people were wearing ear defenders, most didn’t seem to be. No idea how most of them aren’t registered deaf.

Busy in the elly ???
Regards

Glad it all went well - I loved being at Lewes for bonfire in the 80s and the 90s, but it's true the crowds were an accident waiting to happen and I fully understand why the authorities have decided to cut off access to the town to calm it down.

Brilliant photos in a very difficult environment.

Carlotta is an award-winning American photographer who just happens to live in Southover, Lewes. If you need some event photography, I would recommend her unreservedly. She is currently documenting the Pavilion Estate refurbishment project.

I'm a keen photographer myself, and we have the annual "City of Lights" parade down here in Truro in a couple of weeks. Every year, I struggle to get anything as good as her photos, but they are quite inspiring. Will study them for inspiration!
