I tend to agree, but then we had Ben White for just one season, he was great, Cucurella for just one season, he was great, and if Colwill is just one season too, we don't get the transfer profit but if he costs us nothing at all that's fine. Pre Cucurella many peoples choice for best Brighton left back was Wayne Bridge, a one season loan.

I've been doing a fair bit of video watching and reading up on Colwill, have to say he looks VERY good

Perfect solution, he won’t be too demoralised at dropping down to a no-mark club like ours, motivated by knowing that he can play his way back into Tuchel’s plans by having a good season, as Connor Gallagher did following his stint with another minor club Crystal Palace. The best we could have brokered all things considered.

Works for me……very low risk on our part, guy will want to prove himself, provides us with a good defensive option, no cost and gives us time to bring one of our own up to speed or SWOOP for another complete unknown from Honduras or Peru. Win/win.

We would have signed him on a permanent if he has more than a season’s future at the club.

I think this is a mistake. It's the first clear sign that Dan Ashworth has left the club and taken his vision with him. I think it's bad business to bring a player in for a single season like this. He's going to block the progression of Matt Clarke in our squad. Developing other clubs players for them and not financially benefitting is not a good business model. The reason we didn't end up signing Tino Livramento last summer is because of the buyback clause which would limit the level of profit we could have made on the deal. The Cucurella deal was possible because the cards were in our hand, they're not with Colwill and it's bad business.

Or the club have a long term strategy and need a short term fix until that strategy can be fully realised.

Clarke only has a year left so he could quite easily leave next summer even if we play him this season. Plus three loans and he still hasn’t forced his way into the PL squad tells me he isn’t up to it.

Yes a loan is helping to develop someone else’s player, but if we are getting something out of it then it’s win win.

Matt Clarke is nowhere near the standard required.

I don't think he will block the progression of Matt Clarke. I think that Matt Clarke will be leaving to progress as a first team regular for somebody else. He's 25 and has been PotS for both of us his last two loan clubs. He needs to be somewhere that values his strengths and I get the impression that, as good as he is, he's not a great fit for our style. I think that he'll be joining someone for a promotion push. I suppose that we'll find out over the next few weeks.

I think that Matt Clarke is a decent ball playing centre back, but he lacks the one thing that you really need at this level, and that's pace.
So I think it's best we sell him this summer, use Colwill as a stop gap and scout a replacement whilst keeping JP VH to assist in his development and get a few games in this season.
Tony himself said it would be good to get a cup run and I think we can give JP games in the cup to keep him busy, plus he will add cover at CB if we have suspensions/ injuries.
We should have a very decent second string team which will assist with the five subs rule and help mount a strong cup challenge.
