Have not read all this thread but from what I have seen he is a CB. We already have 3 reserve CBs

I agree with you if he is worse than all 3, but he isn't.

Clarke to Stoke (loan ?) - Van Hecke stays with the squad presumably and between him and Cowill for Duffy place

As per the posts below you Stoke are interested in Clarke and Duffy will probably be gone by the window close. In addition you need to remember we can use 5 subs this season and therefore change formation or bring on a specialist left footer while still having other options left.

Left sided CB, so cover for part of the Cucurella role.

Agree

We need a left sided CB to replace Burn/Cucerella. Webster and Veltman are right sided CBs and both have not looked naturals on the left side. Not convinced Clarke or Van Hecke are ready for PL football.

I'm confused by some of these comments. On the one hand, Colwill is being described as a ready-made replacement to slot in where Cucu left off, but on the other hand he's a squad player unlikely to get many minutes because we're already covered.

Which is it? Or it is a bit of both?

It's a bit of both for me.

Our starting 3 CBs if fit should be Veltman (right), Dunk (c) and Webster (left) - Webbo IS good there. But that assumes Lamptey as a RWB and March / Trossard LWB. Colwill is quick and we know how Potter likes to be fluid with formations and players. He gives the option to rest Lamptey, play Veltman as RB/RWB and Webster as RCB and potentially the ability to be a more defensive minded left sided defender - I'm sure GP must be thinking about seeing how he gets on in a wingback or full back role considering he gave that job to Burn for a long while and has also used Mwepu as a right sided wing back.

That's how I see it. Colwill covers Left back, left centre back, whereas Van Hecke covers the other centre back positions and plays cup games. Clarke and Duffy off. Duffy on loan deal to Fulham, Clarke for as much money as we can get.
We then have a year to find the permanent Cucu replacement. Possibly a purchase this window with a loan back for a year as a sweetener ....hopefully Destiny Udogie but Spurs also in for him so will be a struggle.

The problem is that anyone coming in hasn't had a pre season to learn what role/s GP wants them to play.

Guessing he’s left side cover for Webster which means Clarke can move on (without ever playing for us!). Interesting to see if we can turn a profit with a move to the Championship where he has more than proved himself. That means Van Hecke staying as cover for Veltman - either he or Webster can switch to the middle as cover for Dunk, That should be plenty.

Colwill won’t be a wing back ever from the little I saw of him with Huddersfield - a left back in a 4 yes but we lose a lot of flexibility with Cucu going. IMO he was the main catalyst (together with the introduction of Caicedo) for our strong finish last season

The Lamptey situation is rather unclear IMHO as Potter seems to prefer Solly March as RWB at the moment. I don't really see why Solly couldn't go back to LWB, where I thought he was looking good before we signed Cucurella.

That's a common problem across players and clubs with the way the window is structured to finish nearly a month after the season has started. It doesn't mean Potter won't be trying things in training. Burn picked up the position reasonably quickly. Personally I don't think it suited him that well in terms of pace but his technique was good enough to be an out ball. We'd surely try a quicker defender there in training and see how it goes?

Interesting. I missed the Espanyol game as away on hols but am leaving for Manchester tomorrow. I will expect the unexpected!

Like you I think Solly is as good a LWB option as we currently have. I am a little worried though. It was a key position for us to fill last summer and Cucurella made a huge difference to us IMO. While Solly could do a job I hope he at least tries Colwill there or we get in a specialist LB/LWB before the window shuts. All this assuming the deals actually close and get announced at some point
