Anyway we’ve just brought Chris Richards so we won’t be in the running for colwill.

I've not read this entire thread (yeah I'm lazy). Is there any suggestion Colwill wants to come here?

I'd like somebody like Lamptey who has a bit about him, and who isn't afraid to leave the comforting arms (and wages) of an aspiring European Super League club like Chelsea in the hope of getting regular first team football.

Yep, this.

Who wants a player who is being forced here? That said, does Tariq know him? Has he sold it to him maybe?

Confirmed by Naylor as a loan.

I can’t understand this at all. Surely we have a loan-to-buy option?

Otherwise it makes no sense at all. He seems the type of player (at his age) WE would send on loan!

It also means it’s curtains for Clarke I’m afraid.

Agree, effectively assisting Chelsea player development unless loan to buy.

Or helping fill a big hole in the team now ? Obviously don’t have a replacement easily available and perhaps an opportunity to turn to permanent if works out all round ?

I think Dunk or Webster can play there, easier for a right footed player if an attacker cuts inside, you would hope our new LB or LWB would be supporting if an attacker tries to go outside, so no not for me (as a loan anyway), loan to buy would be different.

Edit - perhaps we didn’t fancy him on a permanent?

We need 2 players to replace Cucu ( + Burn ).

We've had a look at what is available and maybe the funds don't stretch that far. Better to get 1 £30 million player than 2 £15 million ones ?

The occasional loan is OK. The loan market is a facility we haven't used to our best gain.

I bet there is no loan fee payable.

Or perhaps he’s a young lad at a big club and thinks he has a pathway there given he’s highly rated and only 19… it’s really not that bad and means we don’t get rinsed trying to get a replacement in this window

There is zero chance we are going to take a player on loan from a PL rival to give them a season of development if it doesn't give us first refusal on signing them at least. Zero chance.

If he has a good season for us - he’s worth £50M+ . We won’t pay that

This. Credit to Justice for calling it and getting taken to task by the NSC knowalls. We have the Cucurella hole patched up while we decide what the permanent rebuild looks like. In those circumstances a loan is ok.

Not happy with the loan.

Will leave us in a bad situation next summer where we either get weaker without profit, or having to splash out what will be considerably more than it would be now.

Strange move from the club.

I think the club have nailed it personally.

Tried to stall a deal whilst we’ve looked at other LB alternatives that haven’t come off. Once the Cucurella deal is done every player would rise in value because they know we have the best part of £60m in our pocket.

Take a loan player as cover for the LCB position and now can explore other options in the remaining weeks for a LB without having a gun to our head.

Smart move all round I think.

I'm sure the club knows what they're doing, some of you need to calm down.

Chelsea obviously either wanted too much upfront for a 19 year old, or some ridiculous buy back clause we wouldn't agree to. Colwill loan isn't ideal, but we lack depth at LCB. If this means more cash for a LWB and defensively minded midfielder this summer, whilst giving us cover in that position, I'm all for it.

I would rather have one loan player, and 2 new starters than 3 meh players because we needed to stretch our budget.
