:tantrum:

It's equally annoying for some of us scots up here seeing Scots wearing England shirts AND those that wear whatever Englands opponents are :tosser:

I'll admit I'd prefer anyone but england to win the World cup, but I won't support other teams just because they are playing england...actually same as what Andy Murray says but the press decided to print something more sensational.
scots wearing england shirts ??

P
saw quite a few on Wednesday night. One loob in the pub with an England shirt and Union Jack shorts. In f***ing Aberdeen. Perhaps the fact he had the bottle to wear shorts full stop marked him down as a bit of a case.

Personally I try to keep a lid on any of the anti Jocko shaninigens as to be fair they get a lot more out of the rivalry thing than the English will ever do. I would say the same about the Taffs etc.

Regarding the history its all so predictable, yet serious students of history would know about the wider context of the UK's history and understand its not the English = nasty, Celts = cuddly fairy tales some would like us to believe. Indeed, given the heavy Scottish influence in key Govt positions recently (Blair, Brown Darling, Reid) and the particular difficulties the major scottish banks have had with the economic downturn one could easily argue that our current problems have something of the Darien project about them.

Anyway sportingwise being 'beastly' to the Scottish is pointless its like Man Utd getting worked up about Rochdale. I would much rather save my ire towards the squareheads and the onion bhajjis..............they at least represent a relevant spotrting rivalry to aspire to.

Oh yes. Plenty of those up here. One of the saddest thing about this country (I mean Scotland) is that there is a significant percentage of Scottish Old Firm supporters who not only don't support Scotland but, in the case of Celtic fans, support the Republic and, in the case of Rangers fans, support England. Total scum in my book but there you go.

On top of that there are plenty of English people who live up here and support England by wearing England strips and flying England flags. Not adviseable in some of the rougher parts of Scotland, but I have no problem with English people supporting their own team.

The town I live in is about 1/3 English and there is plenty of good banter when the World Cup comes along and England are in it, and Scotland aren't.

With posts like this it's no wonder the Scots don't have a lot of respect for England supporters.

The facts of the matter are that the head to head record is only 45-41 in England's favour, with 24 draws. Oh, and Scotland won the last encounter, at Wembley.

The analogy that it's a no-contest is like saying the rivalry between Arsenal and Spurs is meaningless and the Gunners should just worry about Chelsea / Liverpool / Man Utd.

Arsenal are in front head to head and have dominated that rivalry for 20-odd years but Spurs are competitive so no one regards that rivalry as dead. Similarly, Scotland at their best could conceivably beat England if they caught them on a bad day - a defence containing Robert Green, Glen Johnson, Upson, Bridge or Lescott will always concede goals.

One of the main points on this thread is about Scotland fans supporting anyone but England, some English like to reciprocate in kind personally I try not to. That's my point.........I couldn't care less if a Scotland fan respects it or not.

Thereofre as far as I'm concerned my analagy stands, Scotland represent a minor local rivalry to England and if we are to stand up as a top 10 footballing nation then beating Scotland is of little or no consequence...........on an international basis in the last 10-15 years they have been an irrelevance.

You can pull out your stats, it doesn't matter, its like a Leeds fan waffling on about how good they were.

So I do think we should all be more mature about our past rivalries. These days I think England fans should support our wee cousins north of the border whenever they play and ecourage them to establish a new rivalry with a more appropriate footballing peer.............like the Faroes.

We're actually not that bad but I take your point. Of course the rivalry means more to us than it does to you. I would equate it to Man City-Man Utd or Spurs-Arsenal.

For what it's worth, some of the more mature Scotland fans see the need for our football team to be judged on its own merit rather than on what's happening to England but the rivalry with England is part of the DNA of a Scottish football fan.

Look a friendly bit of rivalry is a good thing. Christ sake I get it from both sides. Member of the England travel club so go home and away, married to a Scot who is proud to be Scottish and whose Mum and Dad had Irish parents and were bought up in County Donegal. I must be a gluton for punishment!!!!!

Agree mate. You cannot buy this rivalry. The People should enjoy it instead of crying because a few alkie transvestites wear Argentina tops.

The original international rivalry and the best. Give it to them back.

The rivalry between the Auld Enemies is indeed something that should be treasured.

Too many folk bite far too easily, and then take it that bit too far, and that is the same both sides of the border. Its a real shame that the real humour that is abundant in the rivalry is simply a red rag to the bull. If you take a step back, much of it is actually very funny!

Folk that claim hatred, or to having been upset by t-shirts etc need to stop and think for a moment - they will have endured far worse as brighton fans (assuming they actually get out of their armchairs).

Yes, some things beggar belief at times - but it does go both both ways, and the media love it - it keeps them in a job afterall and they will do what they can to stoke the auld fires. Believe what you will about the newspaper articles/pics etc, but don't tar an entire nation with a single brush.

Only shame is that we cant have our traditional battle on the pitch back! Now where did I put that broken crossbar.....
