And it seems to me that we are conceding a lot less from set pieces (can't find the stats so i could be wrong) and much of that is due to Duffy. Last season, every corner or free kick near the box filled me with dread, this year I am fairly relaxed as I know that Duffy the Heading Machine will sort things out.

Definitely.......Duffy and Dunk are the Twin Towers. Also started to notice how many of our set pieces at the other end they are getting on the end of - a large number of far-post knock downs by them.

Last season we controlled games and let's be honest played better than this season....difference this season is Murray and knocky who score goals :)
Just pointing out that we're far better when kayal is playing than say Norwood:)
I'm not debating our brilliant form and solidness.....I'm talking about performances that's all and that's not really criticising us as it's a results business.

I think our form is much the same as last season. The difference this season is that teams are afraid of us and play differently against us. Most sit in and defend - That leaves us with different dilemmas. The difference this season is that if we go behind we seem to be able to step up our game in an instant and can turn things around more readily. We are more adaptable when behind and more efficient at closing games out when in front.

The Newcastle defeat would not have happened if the sending off hadn't happened. We would have gone in at half time and changed our system had we retained 11 on the pitch and would have come back against them because we were up for it that day. Brentford was just a bad day at the office and filled with individual errors but the fact that we are more than half way through the season and there is only one game where I am slightly critical says a lot about how good the ethics of these players and abilities are.

Very true plus the players themselves do not know when they re beaten this season and play to the 99th minute with hope and determination.

Not the analogy that first springs to my mind . . . . . :nono:

Lots of talk here about winning our next two (or four) matches. We've already run six on the spin. The law of averages suggests we are due a "not win" or two any minute now. Runs of eight, nine or ten straight wins are very rare and for that reason alone I expect us to drop points soon. Should we do so, it's a natural state of affairs and part and parcel of a long campaign. Just hope this board doesn't go into meltdown after a draw or, heaven forbid, a defeat.

I don't think it is .......... yet.

We are starting games more slowly, whereas I feel we are at our best when we are 'zipping' the ball about and working teams from side to side.

In the majority of games this has been the significant difference in the second half.

The good news is we have several levels to step up.

I think we are doing what we have to do to beat teams and if that allows us to play within ourselves and save energy for the next match that is what we do. I'm not therefore saying that we will win every remaining game! The only time I've really felt we went out and seized the chance to destroy was against Norwich, and that was due to the Pritchard affair. It's all very very sensible.

Yes, but last year we destroyed teams, which is good viewing and better for my health.

I'm not complaining, but playing within yourself and scraping victories is all very well until you concede late on (though this has only happened vs Preston).

CH teams never start quickly. I have seen CH teams start quickly, twice in 20 od years. One was the play off semi against Sheff Wed at home and the other was a Stoke City v Norwich match. Every other time they gage the opposition and ease themselves into matches.

They may have got some early goals over the years but seldom do they go for the jugular in the 1st 20 minutes

And Murray.. Murray's defensive headers have always been incredibly handy - always were at Withers.

Sure, I may be having a convenient memory, but whilst we are more solid, I felt we gave more 'complete' performances in terms of domination last season.

This time last year we hadn't beaten a team by more than one goal. Hardly destroying teams. It was the second half of the season where we started to beat teams comprehensively.

I don't agree. The law of averages is the gamblers fallacy, an erroneous judgement. Each game is a completely independent event. That is to say on a game by game basis our chances of reaching the end of the season without a loss are equal to finishing with some losses. It would just be a record season for the books if we did manage it.
There is no 'lady luck' on our side, just us and one game at a time. It's bad enough as the pre-game nerves kick in, don't add an 'unknown' pressure that really isn't there.

But I don't think we are scraping victories (maybe Birmingham away excepted). I think we step up the level when necessary and it's all built on confidence in the defence. I mean Leeds looked great last night - we made them look ordinary. We had to destroy last season because we were playing catch up with goal difference.

So you agree we started to dominate teams albeit in the second half of the season?

Norwich aside, we haven't yet and are still top! [emoji2]

I am talking about the second half, but haven't made it clear.

If you look at my initial post, I think it's good we have several levels to go up.

Fulham A - very fortunate.
QPR - first half Bong saved us. Great second half
Villa - were difficult to crack

I think there were others, but we seem to kick on in the second half of games.

The difference is how solid we are.

There were still a lot of close games in the second half of the season e.g. Forest, Birmingham and MK away, Reading and Bolton home etc but there were comprehensive wins too. We are winning games comprehensively this season at times too. You mention Norwich as the only one but I would say Bristol City away was a dominant display, second half against QPR we were dominant, Leeds was pretty comprehensive. None of those were anything like as nervy as the first half of last season. Also, Rotherham, Forest and Barnsley home were all comfortable.

Mathematically you are quite correct but it's my way of steeling myself for the likely dropped points to come. If we get three points today I shall be surprised. I deeply hope for three points against Massive  as I shall be there for the game.

First half vs Forest very even, the goal changed the game.

Leeds should have been destroyed as they were awful, but yes we did dominate.

MK A we dominated last year, the last minute pen, would have been a travesty.
