Leeds chairman Bates reported to police over programme
Mon 05 Mar, 12:09 PM

LEEDS, England (AFP) - Leeds chairman Ken Bates has been reported to the police after he published the address of a former director of the English Championship club.

Melvyn Levi is involved in a dispute with Bates over the legality of a share issue, and has complained to the police after the former Chelsea owner published Levi's address in a Leeds match programme.

In the article, Bates claims that Levi has cost the club investors, as well as damaging the club with his legal dispute.

Bates wrote: "At this difficult time we should all be pulling together, but have an enemy within, Melvyn Levi.

"Perhaps you would like to ask him to justify his behaviour, which is damaging to Leeds' prospects of advancement. Mr Levi lives at.....'

Levi complained to the authorities after Leeds' 3-2 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend, and said: "I will not allow Bates to get away with what he did.

"He is encouraging fans to come around to my house after describing me in the worst possible terms.

"It's totally disgraceful. I can't understand why he's singling me out. I haven't spoken to him for more than a year.

"He should concentrate on sorting out the many problems within the club, rather that persecute me in language that the Nazis would have used."

Bates is quoted in the Daily Mail as responding in typically defiant terms: "Levi is lucky I didn't put in his telephone number. I'm still waiting for his writ. If he's got a problem, he should speak to me direct."

Bates is clearly wrong there, but Levi sounds a dodgy piece of work.

Very disingenuous to say 'I haven't spoken to him for more than a year', I'm sure their lawyers have been corresponding.

And to fall back on the Nazi analogy is a very cheap shot, and completely inappropriate.

Absolutely marvellous stuff.

Ken Bates is such a twat, I don't like Leeds much, and it's all going horribly wrong for everyone up there. ACE. :drink:

Which club is in more of a shambles, Leeds or West Ham? It must be very close, both are making huge progress on the 'complete shower' front in a variety of different ways.

Agreed there is nothing nice about Master Bates!

Imagine Wise and Bates coming to your dinner party!

Well, we don't know about that. It could well be that the Nazi analogy is completely inappropriate. But if, as Levi seems to indicate, Bates has resorted to using anti-semitic language then the analogy isn't that far-fetched at all.

But as we're not party to their private discussions, we'll never know the truth.

True enough, we don't know for sure. But I'd be pretty certain that if Bates had said anything anti-semitic, you'd have read about it in the story above.

The fact is that Bates is a thoroughly objectionable individual and is capable of falling out with anyone, of any colour or creed. Levi is just the latest, and it doesn't make him an anti-semite.

Bates is doing a WONDERFUL job at Leeds. Bottom of the league, captain wanting to return to lowly Luton, boardroom strife, 2 cartoon characters in charge, likely to be relegated and leapfrogged by Scunthorpe - themselves fuelled by the goals of on-loan Leeds 6th choice striker Jermaine Beckford. Beautiful.

I wasn't implying that he was - Bates has hated just about everyone in his time.

Mind you, it sounds like he and Levi were made for each other.

Absolutely!

April 20th is the date for your diary, day before our away game at Southampton.
Starry, why on earth would you actually choose to spend time with that arsehole?

As objectionable a twat as I find Bates, most peoples addresses are a matter of public record. A keen nutter could find out where he lived if he were determined enough, without Bates's help - I hardly think it's a matter for the police.

But that's not the point, especially when you're talking about a bunch of subspecies like some Leeds fans. I'd say Bates knew damn well what he was doing there, i.e. encouraging somewhere to scare the bloke's wife and kids, throw a brick through the window etc etc. Unbelievable, even by his own abysmally-low standards.
