You completely miss the point of game management then.

When a referee indicates to the players he is going to restart on his whistle he only needs to satisfy himself the players are in correctly positioned in accordance with the Laws of the game not if they are ready to defend it. If the keeper is not ready when he blows the whistle then tough.

If you look at most freekicks the ref blows and the keeper is not set but as the taker of the freekick is generally four or so yards away from the ball this gives the keeper time to get in position. What happened here is a quick thinking player being penalised for the keeper not paying attention.

If you don't understand that you don't understand football. The etc part of your post just doesn't exist. You or anyone else can't make things up.

Do we still have a player standing on the ball directing the wall, but also providing a less obvious function of preventing the FK being taken quickly? We certainly used to when Hughton was manager, but I haven't paid enough attention since GP took over to notice if this sly tactic has been continued.

I find the second whistle point very trivial. Refs rule out goals all the time...by blowing a whistle after the goal is scored. If a ref is not happy with a goal then they have the ability to rule it out. If dunk had taken the free kick and Mason then realised he had made an error letting it go quickly because he wasn't happy with the set up, then he has every right to ask for a retake. The moment he went to check when the second whistle was blown it created an argument which didn't need to exist.

He can not. The rules are simple, ref does not have to wait for the wall or keeper to be ready. Players can ask to take it quickly, it's up to the ref to say yes or no. Once he has blown for the kick to be taken he can not then blow again because he thinks he made a mistake. I have already posted the rules including the link from the FA.

Be peeved Sanchez wasn't paying attention, certainly wouldn't blame the ref as I know the Laws of the game unlike it appears a lot of other people either supporters, players and indeed referees.

I am astounded how little some people know, especially those paid to know. Apparently in the WBA game the freekick given against Welbeck after the penalty was possibly offside. Thick twats and that was the commentary team.

Or knowing our luck and Mason being totally clueless, award West Brom a Penalty. Mason probably thought go on then Dunky take it quick, Brighton strikers can't score so there's no chance you will get it on target.

Garth Crooks has stepped forward with his cutting opinion on Lee Mason. Courtesy of his BBC Sports “The Crooks Of The Matter” page. In short, he’s critical of... Dunk(?) for speaking out after the game. What a spectacularly bizarre take:

Mason's mistake, of course, is he decides to give the goal but VAR reminds him that he blew the whistle a second time and therefore must disallow the goal and rectify his mistake.

What I find remarkable about all of this was the request by the Brighton captain that the referee should somehow come on TV to explain his mistake.

Why? Has Pascal Gross or Danny Welbeck been asked to explain why they missed their penalties or why Dunk himself was found out of position for Albion's first and only goal of the game? No, because these are errors. Unfortunate and costly but mistakes nevertheless.

The game has already found itself in the dock struggling to cope with so many changes to its rules and conventions. Let's not make hanging referees out to dry for making genuine mistakes another one of them. Especially when those mistakes are rectified.

It's not going to help us now but to play it in slow motion and identify exactly when the whistle actually goes will further undermine both Mason and Hooper if it shows the ball was over the line when the whistle sounded.

Under normal circumstances, the referee will tell the captains before the match if he will allow any quick free kicks or not. Do we know what Mason advised his position on that would be?

Dunk said after the game he asked the prick if he could take the kick and the prick said yes and blew his whistle. Simple as that.

A mate of mine went to school (and church) with Crooks. Some years ago I asked him what he was like. The reply was 'intellectually parsimonious, pedantic. . . . prick!' I like a bit of alliteration, me.

It was over the line when he blew the second time. The man is a liar, and he knows it, which is why he was 'injured' when he was supposed to be ****ing up another EPL match this week.
