Your reaction to such a challenge sounds reasonable. Welbeck didn’t hop around and swear though. He rolled over several times. Look I don’t think it’s a big deal but this thread accusing the officials of cheating is a bit of a joke.
Not cheating .. just for being incompetent, which on past and present performances is factually correct.

Reading that I get the impression you haven't seen what actually happened. On MOTD they zoom in on their feet and you can see Welb's foot being squashed into the ground. He couldn't have stayed up if he tried.
No I haven't seen that footage. What I did see was Welbeck going down in a bit of an over the top manner. Deliberate or not, I don't know but I believe this may have been what influenced the refs decision.

Well, if pundits are in almost unanimous agreement that it was a penalty and this is not the first time that this has happened with refs and VAR this season, then people are bound to question what is going on. To make a howler with technology once or twice is excusable, but there seems to be a discussion of this nature every week in some game or other. Something is wrong somewhere and the more often it happens, the less imcompetance can be used as an excuse. The VAR couldn't check if Salah was offside or not as they "didn't have the correct camera angle" is a prime example.

There are always a few who love to take the opposite view to the majority, maybe they’re right and the majority wrong

Going to be controversial but I don’t think that’s a pen at all, he barely looks like he caught him. Think it’s a dive
I can see where you’re coming from but must have been contact - prob a painful one on the toe. No way, with VAR would Welbs have just dived.

Perhaps what is going on is that refs are trying to avoid being conned by divers. In the last few years cheating has become endemic in the game. This season there has been an attempted reset and games have flowed better. There are bound to be a few decisions that would have gone the other way last year. I’m not saying this is one necessarily but I’m not going to make a fuss and call for refs to be sacked. This needs to continue to happen.

That can explain why the ref doesn't give it, because he can't quite see what's happened, but then that's what VAR is for. That's where VAR should step in and say you know what, that's a clear foul and penalty.

Which is fine, but they have technology to help them do that and it clearly isn't working. VAR was supposed to make things better not create more controversy.

Bad fish is making a different point and one that I have also made. The fall looked unnatural. The risk is the ref (rightly or wrongly) thinks he is being conned. Blame Grealish and all the other cheats for this. Not refs.
But I'm not blaming the ref (refereeing is clearly a very hard job that I couldn't do), I'm blaming VAR. Check out the title of this thread - it's about VAR, not the ref.

Seeing photos from the VAR centre, they have various screens in front of them, so can view the foul from various angles.

Thing that grates with this is how Man City got that penalty overturned by VAR against us this season when bernado silva dangled his leg out at 45 degrees.

Was there contact, Yes, dont matter how easily Welbz goes down it was a penalty.

Players try to stay on their feet and you get from Commentators he should have gone down.

If that had at a so called top 6 side playing at home that a penalty.
That happens anywhere else onthe pitch its a free kick.

100% a penalty. One look was enough. It was an obvious on field penalty and an even more obvious VAR penalty referral. It is sometimes unbelievable how wrong they can get it.
They get given for the lightest of touches, but this decision was a total joke.

I’m not sure VAR can resolve these issues because they are still subjective. The roll looks exaggerated to me and contact doesn’t necessarily mean a foul. I think one thing you think another. All the while that is the case (which has been forever in football) VAR is not some factual definitive arbiter. It’s just another view. With that in mind, this season it is being used only to spot things the ref hasn’t seen ie not to re -ref the game which everyone was complaining about last year. If he has seen the same thing but has a different view it won’t be overturned.
How do you quote posts in this new NSC version. I am replying to @Triggaaar and @KZNSeagull but clicking ‘quote’ didn’t make it happen.

Quote kinda saves them for you, so you can select a many as you want.

When you scroll down to the text box to enter your reply, there will be a button "Insert Quotes..." to insert the posts you wish to quote. You may have missed this bit.

Lets say the penalty was given, VAR will still check it, does Mason over rule the onfield Decision? IMO NO.
That’s kind of where we should be with ‘clear and obvious’

Hope the club get some explanation from PGMOL why they didn’t think it was enough to over turn

Agreed, but I also think that's right. It's the footballing equivalent of cricket's "umpire's call", giving the benefit to the on-the-field official.

I think if this incident happened last season, then the ref is sent to the pitchside monitor by the VAR official and the penalty is given. This season, under Mike Riley's new direction, there is less inclination to re-ref the game, and the original decision is left to stand.
