Not being convicted doesn't mean it didn't happen, just that it couldn't be proven in a court
It does mean their name shouldn't be linked with a crime that we don't know they committed. Sure some criminals get off, and in those cases, linking their name with the crime is no big deal to them, they are a nasty piece of work to start with. But completely innocent people to have their lives messed with because our laws allow it.

Rape is one of those crimes where your presumed guilty until proven innocent.

How do you know which are which, though?

You don't. Better to let the name of a criminal stay clean than to ruin the name of an innocent man.

And risk the well being of innocent children who may be abused by a paedophile who we didn't name because he wasn't convicted in a court of law?! Won't somebody please think of the children!

I'm being a little flippant there, but we are coming off topic a bit. My point is simply just because "no one has been convicted in the last 30 years"* doesn't mean none of them were guilty. Slightly different to whether we should name someone who has been accused and not found guilty.

*In quotations because I'm sceptical of the claim, but am going with it to make the point.

I would imagine being able to afford incredibly expensive lawyers helps the footballers in most of these cases
