Lee Hughes - Free agent- thoughts?

Ive just noticed on skysports that he's a free agent after turning down a big contract with Oldham.

We all know this guys history, hit and run story.

We all make mistakes..granted some bigger than others, he's served his time and has shown media wise that he's sorry for what happened and no doubt has suffered a lot...obviously no where near the families suffering..but its not a suffering competition.

Im quite split on this one....he's got a great scoring record in this division and if he was willing to not be guarenteed a first team slot...i think it could be a shrude piece of business.

Was on trial at Notts county i think according to SSN. I think it will always be a divided opinion on this one, some fans would accept that he has done his time and all, others wouldnt want him here for what he has done.
I'm like you, having a split opinion but i certainly think he could do quite well here.

Liam Dickenson would bring in the young and hungry factor, but this would come at a price and for the money that he would cost his scoring record is poor imho.

I can imagine slade would want someone like Dickinson over hughes as we want to build for a future and at best we would get a season out of hughes....but hughes has proved even at 33 hes a 20+ goal a season man still.....and for a freebee a great replacement for owusu.

Hughes plus one more.......I go with Billy sharp of sheffield united or Danny webber.....

I actually thought his record was pretty good, did well at Blackpool and Huddersfield, and average of 1 in 2 at stockport. Billy Sharp was linked to leeds if Beckford left, but would be great if we could get him, personally cant see him dropping down though.

BYF - I'm with you on this one...Hughes is a proved goal scorer and a threat at this level and that's just what we need.

People will disagree with me on this but sometimes they need to realise that Brighton & Hove Albion is a football club and not a popularity contest and it should ultimately be the club's aim to play football at the highest level with the best players at their disposal and I think that Hughes is an excellent player.

Yes - what he did was terrible and I think he should have been locked up for longer, but he's done his time and we want promotion this season so we should be looking at someone of his pedigree to help us to push on next year.

Is the right answer. I'm surprised by so many fans saying stuff like "we're a business not a popularity contest" etc and should sign him. Says more about their own integrity than anything else. Personally, if I was in any way able to influence what kind of player we bring in, I'd be more than happy to place my own moral values above any 'glory' he may (or may not) bring to our famous club e.g. wouldn't want him anywhere near us.

I'm not sure I agree. Obviously what he did was morally hideous. But he was punished by the law and has the right to try and redeem his life.

Presumably no one would object to him trying to resume a trade as a bricklayer, or a shop manager or an investment banker - so why not as a footballer? It just happens to be what he does.

And if you accept he has the right to work, why not work for us if he's good enough. Or are you saying that if you owned your own firm you would never employ an ex-prisoner?

He is easily good enough for us. Oldham were challenging for automatic promotion until he was loaned out to Blackpool. Oldham then failed to even make the play offs.
