As far as I recall, as an ignorant teenager he split up with a black girlfriend because he was worried about what the kids might turn out like. I think he's from around Eltham way so the fact he actually even spoke to a black person back then was a bonus.

I think it would be quite unfair to bandy that about as meaningful now.

There was the Majestyk episode of course but given that one of the Leeds team party is black I'm not sure that Bowyer can take a racist rap for that. After that episode he did nothing other than play football, go fishing, and stay at home with his family.

Far too soon to tell how good a manager is but I have no problem with him.

I have no idea what his mindset is in terms of his views on race issues are currently. Young people can grow out of it by education. Others just suppress negative views in Public.

What category does Lee Boyer fit into ? I think only Lee Bowyer truly knows the answer to that one

I thought the prosecution said it wasn’t racist. Then a newspaper (Daily Mail?) ran an article saying it was racist. The case had to stop and a retrial was needed at considerable expense to the taxpayer.

Just checked up, the victim reported that one of the group had made a racist comment, but that he could not identify which one, so there were no racially aggravated charges against anyone in the trial. By and large the whole incident seems to have been caused by Woodgates mates, and Bowyer happened to be there.

You may have noticed that I am not a huge fan of Lee Bowyer or Leeds United.
I cannot deny that as a manager he has done quite well at Charlton and Birmingham but future England manager, I don't think so.
Bowyer was one of those players that I hated along with the likes of Roy Keane and Robbie Savage horrible, nasty little shits.
Plenty of evidence on you tube.
But I will concede that he seems a lot calmer these days but I still don't like him.

Tried all summer to sign Lyle Taylor from Forest who is absolutely hopeless.

Forest would have driven him to Birmingham themselves but couldn't get the strikers in that they were after so had to hang on to Taylor.

He also has a shady history when it comes to race issues. I don't know the guy so maybe he is over all that. The person to ask might be Kieran Dyer

I've read a few interviews with him where he said he matured a lot after retiring as a player. True or not, no idea.

As for Lyle Taylor, he performed well under Bowyer in Charlton. Just like in the case of Grabban, I think he would be a decent Championship player if he was allowed to do something else than chasing shadows in the mid circle.

*Edit he's from Canning town and started his career at Senrab. Very difficult to play for them and be racist.

Racists can be a bit more discriminating (no pun intended), I know of people who have no issues with West Indians, but have major ones with Asians, or be fine with Indians but not Pakistanis. West Indians might have racist views about Nigerians or vice versa, it isn't a black and white issue.

Lee Bowyer's CV is getting more and more impressive as each season passes.

- In his first managerial job he got Charlton Athletic promoted into the Championship before the rotten board failed to back him financially and they dropped down on the last day at Leeds. To make a fight of it was an achievement in itself.

- joined Birmingham City where he kept them up last season in the spring when they were deep in trouble with Rotherham having five games in hand and favourites to take the golden 21st spot. Years before that they had always been in a relegation battle.

- early days this season in the Championship but they currently sit fourth after six games with only one defeat and three goals conceded. Last night they beat Derby 2-0 and an interview afterwards of calmness and acceptance that there's still 40 league games still left to play. He never gets carried away.

His interviews are thoughtful, incisive and gets every player on the same page as him with great man-management. I don't think it will be long before a Premier League club comes in after him - probably Newcastle as he played for them and Steve Bruce is losing the faith of Geordies surprisingly.

Could he take over from Gareth Southgate in three or four years time? I cannot think of a better English manager apart from Graham Potter, who attracted Tottenham's interest in the summer and proving his worth. Whether he'd want the England job is unknown but I think Lee Bowyer will go to the top and Leeds would be a better fit for him next.

I note you put he has a calmness and acceptance, he did not have this when having a fisticuff with his own teammate, while at Newcastle. Does anyone have the video of this? I remember him losing the plot.

As a player he was a complete nutcase and the very idea of him going into management was as likely as Aaron Conolly becoming the PL Golden Boot winner. However, people really CAN change over time and he's certainly done that in every interview he does with Sky and his fledgling managerial career.

On second thoughts though, even if he was to win the Premier League with Leeds (far fetched I know). I don't see the FA wanting more controversy over his murky past with a high-profile court case - which he was cleared of - , soft drugs and fighting with his teammates. Mud sticks and after the big Sham Daily Telegraph investigation, they'd want a safe pair of hands again like Gareth Southgate.

Watched the game last night. Was impressed with how he spoke and how he’s turned Birmingham around. Will be interesting to see what they do this season. Was shocked how empty the stadium was though.

That's my memory too. I immediately think of David Batty when I think of Lee Bowyer.
