Has retired from professional football. Shame, without the injuries surely he'd have been one of the best central defenders in the country

I think without injuries an England central defence of Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King would have been outstanding. Both have great positioning and are never rushed or hurried.

I agree it's a real shame. Glad Spurs have organised a role for him and I hope it goes well

Thierry Henry: "The only defender here who doesn't hold shirts and still gets the ball off my feet easily is Ledley King."

If i remember correctly there is a phenomenal clip on youtube where Arjen Robben is CLEAN through for Chelski and Ledley King seems to make up about 20 yards before doing a last ditch slide tackle.

It was just bonkers. Would love it if someone could find it.

Great player, filled the vacuum left by Sol 'Judas' Campbell.

Robben should have pulled the trigger though.

I couldn't agree more - as fantastic a challenge as it is, he should never have had the chance to make it. There was more than enough time for a player of Robben's talent to control and shoot before Ledders was even close...

Obvious talent and still had a top career, even with his injuries, so it is a genuine shame he has had to pack it in.

BUT sometimes you can have a better career when you dont actually get to prove it.

I would suspect, had he been fit, that a couple of indifferent performances at top tournaments would of meant a tidal wave of criticism from the press followed by fans and so the deconstruction happens, he might have even become a hate figure for some.

Its what we do, so Ledley is fortunate enough to have been shielded from that and will never know how good he might have actually been.

You wonder if he had remained fit whether he would have been first choice for England and, if so, the effect on the team dynamic that might have had over the last decade. He almost certainly would have been captain and we wouldn't have had so much of this Terry / Rio / Beckham / Gerrard armband bollocks.

Maybe but we just dont know.

I am not sure how many England caps he has earned, but apart from those it has even been stop start appearances in the Premiership.

I recognise his talent, but even fallen out of nightclubs has been forgiven, if he had fulfilled his potential and became Englands regular CB, I am guessing his performances and lifestyle might have come under greater scrutiny.

It's amazing he's managed to play for as long as he has considering the state of his knee.
