So 'Arsenal have opened talks' but 'personal terms already agreed' and 'talks will continue'?
Maybe I'm being naive, but... WTF?
It happens, same as when we fly scouts etc to South America all the time, we generally butter up the agents, discuss idea on contractual terms and all that goes with it before making a formal bid

We never accepted or were going to accept Man City’s offer, which was very low in comparison to his value at the time of selling. Him kicking off over this was the catalyst to him actually going - that plus Chelsea’s comically large offer.
This is why he got dogs abuse at the Amex the likes of which I’ve never seen before or since - or likely will again. It was a cauldron that day. Magnificent

Clubs won't want to start making offers until they have agreed in principle with players/agents the basic terms of the contract. Standard now.

A lot of deals - the majority - are done by agents talking to buying clubs about their clients demands. For example, Trossard’s agent and several clubs are having conversations about wages, bonuses, signing on fees and getting expectations agreed. Then it’s simply a case of going to the selling club and saying “everything is agreed in principle, my player wants to leave” then finalising the fee or saying he’s not for sale.
There’s no point going through weeks of negotiating over transfer fees/clauses and getting all the legal paperwork drawn up if the player doesn’t want to leave and says no anyway. If they’re under contract they don’t HAVE to go anywhere, especially if they are being paid handsomely.
Look at half of Barcelona’s team, people like Benito Carbone, Winston Bogarde for examples of this…

Fair enough. Makes a bit of a mockery of the whole 'tapping up' thing, then! Also, I thought I'd seen instances where deals had been 'done', but then personal terms couldn't be agreed – or were yet to be agreed? I guess it works all ways...

He gets an awful lot wrong, his “misses” are buried and the “hits” emphasised. It’s absolute bullshit 101. Try watching a psychic doing a cold read, it’s the same principle. Common sense (X player is available, X club have money), a few insider tips here and there and a lot of bravado.
I saw a post on social media with his prediction/rumour rate and he’s right around 32% of the time even with his alleged “contacts”

The basic terms of the contract can be agreed but then when the lawyers get involved it could break down over something in the detail/clauses etc.
There's a 4 part documentary available on Sky at the moment following players and agents during the '22 summer transfer window. The agents are actively sourcing buying clubs, mediating between clubs, agreeing terms to the deals before offers are made etc etc. The bid being made/accepted is almost the 2nd to last thing that happens.
As you say, the concept of 'tapping up' being an issue is long gone.

Exactly this. There are all kinds of deals done, but nowadays it’s all agent led with the clubs being the final call rather than the first. Player power.
They can even be transferred and still not want to go. Remember the David Unsworth move to Villa? He'd been there a couple of minutes and said it was a big mistake as his wife didn't want to live in Birmingham; he got sold within days.
I don't think any club wants a repeat of that
Apparently no one knows apart from the those at the top of the club.

Ultimately the player has to agree to move once they have a contract. You can’t force a player to move - you can try and manage them out, say it’s best for their career, etc - but if a player wants to train with the u18’s and collect 5 years worth of £50k a week, they can.
