Just banged this off to the Argus letterpage (slightly edited). Doubt they'll bother with it, but hey-ho, at least I've got it off my chest.

The rancid stench of hypocrisy, obstruction, disorganisation, underhand delaying tactics and flat-out incompetence on behalf of the Toads Hole Valley owners and Lewes District Council at the Falmer Public Inquiry just about beggars belief. It is an utter disgrace that not only the Albion, but the council tax payers of Lewes will be footing an enormous, ever-inflating legal bill as this insufferable process is further dragged out while it crawls along towards its obscenely delayed conclusion.

We were told last JULY in the letter from the ODPM that the Inquiry was to briefly reconvene to investigate the suitability of other potential sites for the stadium. Despite being offered several earlier dates, Lewes District Council saw fit to delay the start of the Inquiry until February (when the Albion were ready to recommence the Inquiry at the beginning of December). The reconvened Inquiry was expected to go on for three weeks, before finally being packed off to the ODPM for a decision. Three weeks has now stretched closer to three months, with the final summing up now scheduled for the first week of May.

Lewes District Council should be brought to book over this. They owe their taxpayers a FULL and SPECIFIC breakdown of all the costs, down to the last penny, that they have incurred in legal fee's on the lawyers and consultants they have employed to oppose this stadium. An additional £25,000 of public funds was allocated by Lewes District Council at the turn of the year towards the reconvened Public Inquiry. The details of this scandalous waste of time and money should be published in full for public viewing, as it is public money they are spending on this shameful fiasco. They should also be asked to justify precisely why they have embarked on this protracted campaign against the proposed stadium at Falmer, when it does not even fall within their district. Part of the proposed coach park falls within Lewes District Council's outer boundaries of jurisdiction. However, as the proposed stadium is several miles from the town of Lewes, it would be interesting to know how many Lewes residents the Coucnil are representing actually feel that they would be adversely affected by the proposed development, and whether they support their Council running up enormous legal fee's in opposition, using their constituents money to pay for it. It would also be interesting to know how Lewes District Council feel they are justified in opposing a stadium at Falmer because the area is a designated AONB, and yet are happy to argue the case for a stadium to be built further along the A27 at Toads Hole Valley instead, despite this also being an AONB. A classic example of NIMBY-ism if ever there was one.

Lewes District Council, now ably assisted by the owners of Toads Hole Valley, have succeeded in making a complete mockery of this public inquiry. Their behaviour throughout has been utterly contemptable, and whatever the result of the Inquiry, the shameful delaying tactics employed by Lewes District Council, and the costs incurred as a direct result, needs to be exposed in full.
