LDC Lib Dem Planning Councillor abandons NIMBYism

There's an interesting story in today's Argus about the end of the Public Inquiry into the proposed wind turbine at Glyndebourne.

The turbine is being opposed by all the usual suspects - the CPRE, the South Downs Society and all the local NIMBYs.

However ... Councillor Peter Gardiner, who lives locally (at Ringmer) and is the new Lib Dem Lead Councillor for Planning on Lewes District Council has this to say:-

"I am certain that one turbine, rather than a major wind farm, is appropriate here".

How interesting is that? If he had followed the previous pattern of LDC Lib Dem interventions on planning issues affecting the AONB, he'd be saying exactly the opposite. Instead, he's backing the turbine and abandoning knee-jerk NIMBYism. AND he's a local resident with votes to worry about. He could have said, had he wished, simply that he was "looking forward to reading the Inspector's report".

Very encouraging, in my opinion, particularly as we move towards tidying up the loose ends in the Stadium planning process.

I know Peter Gardiner, of course. He was my opponent in the two election campaigns I fought. I guess it's safe to say now that I found him to be rather more thoughtful and sensible than some of his Lib Dem party colleagues elsewhere in the district.

Pity it could not have happened 5 years ago. Anyway, knowing the Argus its probably a misprint.

Abort, retry, fail
Isn't this just a case of Councillor Gardiner holdig the opinion and invoking the old "...except under exceptional circumstances" as he feels that the negative effects of the proposed wind turbine are outweighed by the greater good? Something that he didn't agree with regarding the football stadium or is it simply that a wind turbine will not attract 22,000 blood thirsty marauding football fans?

I suspect Peter Gardiner of being fairly influential in the decision of LDC to give up on opposing Falmer.

He was only elected in August 2007 and replaced Neighbour as Lead Councillor for Planning.

Mind you, that wouldn't be difficult would it when you see what you had to compare him with. Neighbour, Pepper, De Vecchi, Cuttress.........

One wind turbine isn't going to affect anybody's poxy property prices. The gesture also suitably doffs the cap in the general direction of Glyndebourne and the political big beasts that frequent the place. Can't do any harm for the political future.

It's a sad reflection of the disgusting state of the LDC Lib Dems that any isolated outbreak of apparent reasonableness is seized upon as a cause for celebration.

IMHO like.

I don't know this bloke, and I'm more than happy to go with the opinion of those that do that he's a bit more sensible than some of the others.

But you can't help feeling that there is plenty of snobbery lurking not far below this, and what the opera house with all their influential patrons wants they get, while the local football club didn't get the same consideration.

I agree with Tooting.

How is it that the Falmer Stadium is vehemently opposed by some and yet a massive grandstand smack in the middle of the South Downs visible for miles (and not a particularly attractive building either) can be built at Goodwood?
