Nah - sorry, but wouldn't touch one with a barge pole - too expensive on the leccy bills compared to LCD.

Samsung plasma 42"
standby: 1 watt, 0.06 amps
black screen: 65 watts, 0.58 amps
white screen: 203 watts, 1.76 amps
red screen: 191 watts, 1.7 amps
blue screen: 190 watts, 1.67 amps
green screen: 180 watts, 1.56 amps
static: 251 watts, 2.21 amps
Atanarjuat (3 hr): 0.64 kilowatt hours
Battlestar Galactica (3+ hr): 0.67 kilowatt hours
CNN (overnight): 3.97 kilowatt hours

Samsung LCD 40"
standby: 10 watts, 0.17 amps
black screen: 200 watts, 2.55 amps
white screen: 199, 2.58 amps
red screen: 199 watts, 2.57 amps
blue screen: 198 watts, 2.57 amps
green screen: 198 watts, 2.96 amps
static: 264 watts, 3.23 amps
Atanarjuat (2 hr 30 min): 0.57 kilowatt hours
Battlestar Galactica (2 hr): 0.49 kilowatt hours
CNN (overnight): 3.41 kilowatt hours

(From the Samsung website)

LCD has a stunning picture till the action becomes fast moving.
I watched two games on a brand new Samsung on Sunday.

Whenever the ball was kicked hard it either disappeared in flight or jittered across the screen.

Close ups of players jogging were surrounded by a digital halo. The problem is the poor refresh rate on these types of TV. In a word crap.

If you watch a lot of sport then stay with CRT.

Uncle C - poor quality digital sources (cable) and terribly set up systems (people using CVBS instead of RGB from the box to the TV) contribute the majority of the problems with motion these days, actually. CRT is still better - for the moment. Its also not the refresh rate, LCDs can refresh faster than any CRT and TV is on 50hz, its the "rise and fall time" of the pixels - the time needed for them to change content (not refresh content).

Thanks MYOB, I stand corrected on the technicalities. I was dying to get my hands on the set to see if it could be improved. I will suggest component leads to them.

Component would be best, RGB is a close second (as it is component in theory). Good SCART lead (20 NOT 200 quid!) and an RGB feed from the DTT/Cable/Satellite box will give the best possible picture if component isn't available.

I have just purchased a Sony Bravia 46" LCD Beast and its amazing. Got it from Comet online who were a very good price compared to all others and were top notch on service.

I am a Sony whore but believe you get what you pay for. Dont even bother with plasma if you want it on your wall if the wall isnt re-inforced with steel. htose bastards weigh a tonne.

to be fair theres no point having a FULL/HD Tv unless you have an HD source via HDMI or at least an upscaling component source :)

I had an 40x2000 Sony LCD, the most expensive LCD (and according to every review the best) when it came out £2500, its wasn't a patch on my 42" Panasonic plasma :)

Did I mention HD TVs on this ???

No, but thats what you were talking about

"CRT is still better - for the moment. Its also not the refresh rate, LCDs can refresh faster than any CRT and TV is on 50hz"

unless theres another type of TV thats been invented I haven't heard about :)

interesting observation, despite all the detailed numbers coming out in favour of plamsa, when the practical, applied numbers are compared, the LCD comes out top ??? isnt that odd?

LCD can insert additional frames, at least thats what the Panasonic LXD models at 100Hz are apparently doing. not sure if this can/cant/simply isnt done with plasma.

Find one you like then get it from Richer sounds. Great value, they know what they are talking about and they do a warrenty for 5 yrs for 10% of the value of the set. i.e. £99 for 5 yr cover on a £999 set. Great value IMO

Normally i'd agree with you, but in this instance they're not the cheapest(by quite a margin) - although the extended warranty does appeal
