We were thinking about a 37" tv but when I went to the shop and actually looked at them in the flesh (or plastic) I realized that they are nearly identical in size. In the Sony ones we're looking at there was only about 6cm in height and 4 cm in width we've got a decent sized wall so I think we'll go the 40".
I saw the LG one and even though it was a few tv's away the quality of build wasn't great and the clarity of picture was quite apparently not as good as the Sony one (they were showing some Casino Royale promotional DVD), although the Panasonic one was as crystal clear as the Sony one, but the speakers were a little tinny sounding. The sony was better but whether its an extra £200 better I don't know yet...

I shall watch this thread with interest, as I have a yearning to upgrade to a nice new shiny LCD TV... 
The screen I've got my eye on is the Toshiba 40XF355D:

It's got an ultra-small frame (they call it 'picture frame') so the 40" actually takes up the same size as 37" sets:

I must admit I also saw the Panasonic (not sure what model but it was 37") and it looked really good, good speaker sound as well given that I couldn't see where the speakers actually were!

I would recommend Panasonic all the way at the moment, they seem to have LCD and especially Plasma 100% dialled ..

£1699 from John Lewis, which is where I first saw it, but they throw in a £250ish HD-DVD player too.
It can be got elsewhere for around £1200 but that will only come up with a 1 year warranty. Adding a 5 year warranty (to bring it onto a par with JL who sell all sets with a 5 year warranty) will bring it to about £1350 with Amazon.

+ £70 P&P with DD, which brings it to £1195 - it can be had for a couple of quid cheaper if you're watching every penny. The 5 year warranty with them is £300, making Amazon cheaper.
forgot about that, digitaldirect are one of my contracts so gave to him for nothing.

We grew up without tv, not a bad thing to be honest. We only got one when I was 17 and my Nana died and we inherited hers (old box with a sliding close door and v-hold and a set of ears like a reindeer for an aerial)...began the nights of no longer having dinner together...and about an hours less piano practice for me a day!
if i am honest i do not miss it that much, sometimes someone mentions something (that half man, half tree programme from last week) that i wish i could watch and of course the football/nfl but it got to the stage here where there were very few things worth watching on tv. but we would still sit there and watch anyway. we have the radio, internet to keep up with things. the children complain a lot, especially the oldest because his friends watch the simpsons every night or whatever. he'll live!

I guess since we never had it in the first place I didn't know what I was missing when people talked about it. We had loads of other stuff that we did, read loads, had EVERY evening meal together, I did 7 grades of piano and practiced about 3 hours a day, etc. etc. most of which fell by the wayside when the tv arrived.

I watched that and it had me in tears(and I'm no soft lad either) its quite disgusting what humans will make other humans do just for a bit of cash ...
it would be easy if we never had tv, because like you they wouldn't know what they were missing. but until earlier this year we were very much a tv household. one in the living room, kitchen, playroom and study. now we just have one in the living room (not connected to an aerial or sky) for DVDs and sometimes the wii.
my daughter doesn't care - she is busy with her hobbies but my son whines every day about how we are the nastiest parents in the world for not having any tv shows. maybe he needs more hobbies!
redland - that programme sounded really interesting, i read about Dede in the paper and would have like to have watched. i think it's a whole series - extraordinary people - maybe it will find its way to dvd.
