We're buying ourselves a new idiot box for Chrimble...

Just been down to our local high street retailer (doing my bit for local yokles) and the one I like was the Sony S Series 40" Bravia LCD KDL40S3000U thingamy bob doovey whatsits...

Anyhow if I buy that £899, and then we're thinking of getting a Sky HD box as well So that'll be £329 to upgrade and £48 a month (instead of current £36)....and then we'll need a new DVD player - sort of optional but since we watch our dvds through a playstation at the moment - seems the right time to upgrade - so about £80 (I'm guessing?)

So if I decide to go the whole hog its about £1,228 to get set up and £12 more a month...

Is this too much to pay to watch tv or not??

Never :)

HD Tv is wickered if your gonna TV you might as well watch the best programs in the most spectacular visual way as possible ..

I did the same process as you a while ago and I'm still amazed at how good HD stuff is like The Blue Planet etc etc etc looks

remember its an investment for 5 years plus .........

If you were to buy a £700 telly, over 5 years you save £40 a year, would you notice that. And for an object on every day?

However, we believed the Panansonic range outclassed the Sony, for picure and sound. And so did the John Lewis staff.

Well you can save £200 off the TV if you buy online.

Also, if you're going to buy a DVD player, you might as well go HD-DVD (£200 plus loads of free films) or Blu-ray (£300 for PS3). Both upscale DVDs too.

There are good and bad Sony LCDs, though (with prices to match).

They're all called Bravias, but the model letter (D, S, X etc) denotes the range and the quality.

The LCD (40" also) I've got my eye on is currently more than that alone, but I figure if I'm buying now-ish I might as well go for a 1080p set. (The Sony S series is 1080i, I think).

You could probably save £200 or so on that set online or pay a couple of hundred or so more than your budget and go for the V3000.

Panasonic have a superb reputation for their plasmas, even the non 1080p panels, and their new LCDs have had good write-ups too.

If you go for top notch Sonys (ie the X series) you'll have a bloody good set. But you'll pay too, Sony do still attract a price premium.

OOOOOOOOH - save £200 where?

They had a blue ray thingy in the store - hadn't the foggiest what it was about but we watched a clip of Casino Royale (a promotional disc) and it was astounding frankly.....What actually is Blu Ray?

Tede - click the Amazon link at the top of this page and enter 40S3000 in the search box. Buy from there and not only are you saving yourself £200 but you'd be contributing £30 or so to the NSC hosting coffers!

Will do! They don't appear to be there at the moment though...

Thanks for that - but it doesn't work - I've clicked on the Amazon one though at the top and that worked. But as I said before I thought there was a tv related one that comes up in the google ads every now and then...but the Amazon deal seems good enough thanks...

Does anyone [I am a TV retard] have an opinion on this 37" LG one?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-Ready-LC...0PXCIRK/ref=pd_ts_ce_18?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

Which? seemed to rate it.

To be franky honest with LCD tvs you get what you pay for, cheap Tv's will simply not look as good as expensive ones, again this is all dependant on what source your connecting the TV to as well and how far your gonna be sitting away from the screen..

Cheap LCD's will show there weakness when watching fast moving pictures, ESPECIALLY things like football can look really poor though a SD feed on a cheap LCD..
