Still amazing how long this transfer record lasted, only eclipsed when we sold BZ from memory.

Shows heavily we fell post 83...

Was too young to appreciate how good he was when playing for Albion. Remember him being magnificent for Liverpool though. He and Hansen made football look so simple.

I've watched the full video. He starts off blasting the BBC about him not being the right colour and getting sacked.
Very interesting about the 10 year contracts but guaranteeing he would be sold for a large fee. Nothing changes at Brighton. I wonder how many players were on 10 years?
.............and I wonder how many would turn down Arsenal because they were paying less than Brighton! Bunch of cheapskates!

We famously had the highest wage bill in the first division - because top players weren't interested in playing for little 'ole Brighton.

Tony Bloom hasn't fallen into that trough of old bollocks.

Funny though - Arsenal then, 'never mind less money - look at the bronze bust of Herbert Chapman, the marble hall and the under-floor heating in the changing room - how can you resist?!'
Brighton now - 'never mind less money - look at the lovey training ground!'

Up until a few years ago I'd have whole-heartedly agreed with both of you, but I do feel we've had some over the last few seasons who could run him pretty close!

But yeah, he'd still be an all-time top Albion XI unquestionably. Defence or midfield. Remember that goal he scored against Wolves in the FA Cup?
The goal in the FA cup against Wolves remains the best I’ve ever seen live including Enciso’s vs City.

Quite a few I believe - you now know where all the cup final money went!

He was majestic. My first hero was Spider Mellor, followed by Lawrenson. They both seemed to just glide out effortlessly with the ball. While Mellor was a winger, he was a ball winner too and he and Lawro had this ability to smoothly pick the pockets of attacking players and almost move away with the ball unnoticed.

While others were focused on the likes of Ward for heroes, I always loved the defenders and midfielders.

Lawro also used to live in a house near me in Shoreham. I’d often see him walking his dog alone. He looked a grumpy bugger then as well 😂
Have to say I don't remember Mellor being a winger. His best season was alongside Ward with Sully on the left and Towner or Fell on the right.

It was good but no better than Ryan's goal against City. Obviously I don't know what other goals you've seen but Izquierdo's away at stoke was a sublime team goal. I would also say Enciso's against City was better, not just because of the finish but all the play in the build up.

Still, it's a game of opinions.

Great Player. I remember him getting stretchered off against Wolves in an FA cup tie. Could be wrong nut I think that injury haunted him for the rest of his career

Number one for me is Willie Irvine v Villa in 1972. Sweeping move down the whole field and a thunderous finish into the top corner. Lawro's Wolves goal up there plus Izquierdo's, which doesn't seem to get the plaudits it deserves.
Let's be honest, there would be no other contenders if Vicente's shot had been a few inches lower v Derby.

Saw all of those ‘live’, probably like yourself.

Still think Lawro’s by some distance. I think it depends if you like a team build-up or individual brilliance. People rate Maradona’s vs England, but Lawrenson’s run started deeper than that, and he beat more players.

I recall Zamora scoring a brilliant team goal in the championship as well…. Let’s face it we’ve seen stacks of them.

If you want a pure strike MacAllister’s disallowed goal vs Leicester….. but it was disallowed 😃

As you say all opinions.
