Sad news, France's last great cyclist has lost his fight with cancer, he was still doing the TV commentarys this summer during the TDF, when we were out there this year.

He won the Tour de France twice, in 1983 and 1984, and was a great icon for me watching on channel 4 in my youth.

Fignon, who will forever be remembered for the final time-trial stage of the 1989 Tour when he lost out to Greg LeMond by eight seconds, won 76 races during his career, including La Flèche Wallonne in 1986, Milan-San Remo in 1988 and 1989 and the Giro d'Italia in 1989.

Only 50.

Sad - he won a couple of TDFs when I first started getting into cycling.

Another racer dies young - that drug intake must catch up with them.

A lot of the doctors said the performace inhancers (he states he took amphetamines) did not lead to his cancer. However I am sure I saw an interview where he states he believes they did.

Was one of the youngest winners and the last great French champion, I loved Le Mond and have the video on the 1989 tour. The prof had 50 seconds lead and rode with his regular bike and Le Mond had all the latest technical gear and took the race by a thread.

Great race and sad loss to both cycling and the French TV, will be odd not to hear him rattling on in a French cafe during the tour in the future.

What a rider.

Too much remembered for what happened in 1989 and not for his two crushing Tour wins in the early 80's

The '89 Tour will probably never be bettered.

His autobiography is a good read...

Sad news to see him go so quick, having only just seen him talk about his illness when he was interviewed on this years Tour.

I'm like others here - got into TdF in the 80's via Channel 4 and Laurent Fignon is one of the great names that I'll never forget.

RIP.

RIP - Twas him and others like him in the 80's who got me interested in cycling. Saw an interview with him a few years back and he seemed like a real genuine nice chap.

Taken at too young an age.
